THE CAPTAIN OF SALVATION

Hebrews 2:10-18
INTRODUCTION:
Last, last Saturday or Sunday, we have seen that the Author of Hebrews emphasized the superiority of Jesus Christs over
Angels despite of Jesus humanity, though for a little while He was made lower than Angels that is in in Man’s Position or
in a position like His brothers. Jesus Christ is superior to Angels even in humanity because Jesus fulfills the plan of God
becoming the Author, the Originator, the Founder, the Captain of Salvation (that makes our topic this morning in
Hebrews 2:10-18 with a title of……)

The Captain of Salvation was made perfect through His suffering. He become like us, His brothers so that He could be
our merciful and faithful priest before God, a Priest who would be both merciful to us and faithful to God in dealing with
the sins of people. (Hom. Idea)

Let us read our passage this morning….(in NKJV)

10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make
the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being
sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, 12 saying:
“I will declare Your name to My brethren;
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”
13 And again:
“I will put My trust in Him.”
And again:
“Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.”
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through
death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those who through fear of death
were all their lifetime subject to bondage. 16 For indeed He does not give aid to angels, but He does give aid to the seed
of Abraham. 17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful
High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For in that He Himself has
suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.

…..we can see that…

The Captain of our salvation is a name given to our Lord in this Letter/Book( Hebrews 2:10 NKJV ), because He is the
author and source of our salvation, the perfect leader fit to bring salvation, the head of His people whom He is directing
to glory.

 The word “Captain” in Greek is “Archegos” (Ar-khay-gos) means a chief leader

 In etymology term "captain" derives from katepánō lit. '[the one] placed at the top', or 'the topmost'

…I will share 3 things concerning our topic today----The Captain of Salvation (none other than our
Lord Jesus Christ)

I. HE WAS MADE PERFECT THROUGH HIS SUFFERING-----HIS FINISHED WORK (death on the
cross)
V10-13

 “It was fitting” refers to the full application of God’s way/method/means in which God accomplished
His will through the death of Jesus Christ… it refers to the action of God worthy of His divine nature
and as the God for whom and through whom everything was made.
 Pro-evangelo planned before the creation
 It was indeed the will of God the Father, the sovereign creator of all that brought about the humanity
(incarnation) and even the death of His Son.
 The creator becomes the redeemer of His creation
 That’s why the death of Jesus Christ involves not weakness and inferiority but strength and
superiority because (as I said a while ago), Jesus fulfills the plan of God becoming the Author, the
Originator, the Founder, the Captain of Salvation. Amen!
 Jesus Christ was made perfect in suffering primarily because of the accomplishment & fulfillment of
God’s purpose of creation/ God’s plan.
 Jesus Himself told this in Luke 24:46….

Luke 24:46
46 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to
rise from the dead the third day,

A. PURPOSE OF HIS SUFFERING

1. Bringing many sons to glory v10
 “bringing” in Greek is “ago” a primary verb means to lead, to induce, to bring drive
(determination, initiative)
 “glory” in Greek is “doxa” means dignity, glory, honor, praise, worship
 Accdg to HELPS word studies
 1391 dóksa (from dokeō, "exercising personal opinion which determines value") –
glory. 1391 /dóksa ("glory") resembles to the OT word, kabo (OT 3519, "to be
heavy"). Both terms convey God's infinite, intrinsic worth (substance, essence).
 [1391 (dóksa) literally means "what evokes good opinion, i.e. that something has
inherent, intrinsic worth" (J. Thayer).]

- Our God—the One who made all things and for whose glory (splendor, beauty, magnificience) all
things exist—He wanted many people to be His children and share His glory. So he did what he
needed to do.

-Jesus Christ become like us so that we may become like Him

2 Corinthians 5:21
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of
God in Him.

-the blessed state of “glory” (magnificent, splendor) is attain through Christ’s work.

-Challenge: are we bringing sons to glory / bringing people to heaven(to share with the glory of
our Lord Jesus Christ?). It is not us who will going to work but are we allowing ourselves to be
God’s instrument in bringing many sons to share His glory?

2. He makes men holy/sanctified (as He is holy) v11

-accomplished by His death
-both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family….

Hebrews 10:10
10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once
for all.

3. He calls them Brethren / Brothers v12-13

--in His humanity, Jesus is fully one with us and therefore we all are the same family to the extent
that He become our brother and not ashamed to call us brothers.
-3 verses were quoted in OT by the author to prove/support this claim: (referring to the assembly as
His brothers/brethren
1. Psalm 22:22 (NIV)
 this Psalm directly comes from the lips of Jesus Christ, If He speaks of this Psalm to God,
then much more to the delight/joy of our author- He refers to the people in the assembly as
His brothers.

I will declare your name to my brothers;

in the congregation I will praise you.

2-3 Isaiah 8:17-18

17 I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob.
I will put my trust in him. 18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me. We are signs and
symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.

 It is the Lord (kurios) who speaks to God (theos)

-Challenge: Are we declaring His name to our brothers? Are we singing praise to Him? Are we
putting our trust in Him? Are we declaring His name to others so that those who are chosen will
hear & believed?

II. HE HAD SHARED IN GOD’S CHILDREN HUMANITY-----IN FLESH & BLOOD

V14-16
14 Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same,
that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and release those
who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

-awhile ago we see that His suffering (His finished work-death on the cross), is on a positive side because it
brings salvation to those who believe, but in here stated negatively but eventually brought positive result.

A. PURPOSE OF “IN FLESH & BLOOD”

1. Being born as human so that He could Die

-it is only through humanity that he could die

2. His death might destroy the power of death--- The Devil

 The author says “might”, as of now the devil who holds the power of death continues but of
limited power and will be totally destroy at the return of Jesus Christ
 So this is an encouragement to us to continue to be aware, to be ready, because the devil is
just around the corner (waiting for opportunity to devour)
1 Peter 5:8
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he
may devour.

Ephesians 4:27
27 and do not give the devil a foothold.

 Challenge: Lets not give the devil a foothold to us, lets not give the devil a way to defeat us
Amen!

3. His death release those who are in bondage of fear of death

 It says release from the fear of death not deliverance/escape from death, for death still comes
but it no longer be feared.
 Jesus came to destroy to the devil’s work
 Through His death, we are set free from fear of death…Amen!

1 John 3:8
8 The devil has been sinning since the beginning. Anyone who continues to sin belongs to the devil.
The Son of God came for this: to destroy the devil’s work.

Rev. 1:8
18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys
of death and Hades.

4. To Help Abrahams’s Descendants

 He helps the people under Abraham
 And who are they?
Galatians 3:7
7 So you should know that the true children of Abraham are those who have faith.

….. to help His brother whom He is not ashamed to call them brothers….
III. HE WAS MADE LIKE HIS BRETHREN/ BROTHERS-----NECESSARY (required/essential/mandatory)
V17-18

A. Purpose of making Him like His Brothers

Philippians 2:7
rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness.

1. He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God

 A priest who would be merciful to us and faithful to God in dealing with the sins of people
 The full humanity of Jesus enables him to perform the function of a high priest
Hebrews 5:1
5 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in
matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

2. To make Atonement for the sins of the people

 We shall see later on in Chapter 9-10 all the important work of a high priest esp in the day of
atonement
1 John 2:2
2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole
world.

3. He can help those who are tempted

 For He Himself were tempted in his humanity by the devil but overcome it
 Refers to peirazo (test/enticement from Satan)
Hebrews 4:15
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we
have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.
Hebrews 5:2
2 He can have compassion on those who are ignorant and going astray, since he himself is also
subject to weakness.
CONCLUSION:
The author and source of our salvation, the head of His people, the Captain of Salvation none other than our
Lord Jesus Christ:
I. He was made perfect through His suffering—His Finished Work
Purpose: To bring many sons to glory
To make man holy/sanctified
To call them Brothers
II. He had shared in God’s Children Humanity---in Flesh and Blood
Purpose: To be born as human so that He could die
To destroy the power of death—the Devil
To release those who are in bondage to the fear of death
To help Abraham’s descendants

III. He was made like His Brothers----Necessary

Purpose: He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest before God
To make Atonement for the sins of the people
He can help those who are tempted

We have seen the benefits/result/purpose of Jesus Christ’s Humanity in our life today, may we not take it lightly but let
us be encouraged to continue to strive to do the will of God in our life. Let us continually proclaim the message of His
finished work, the message of sharing God’s Children’s humanity & the necessity for Him to be made like us, His
brothers…Amen!
