CHAPTER I

PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

1.1. Introduction

White boards are now an important element used by corporation, institutions, and other
professionals use for the purposes of appropriate instruction, presentation, demonstration,
and training (R.S.F. Tamo, P. Oyekola, N. Clinton and K. Komuna,2021). The white board
continues to stand out among the electronic boards, chalkboard, projector, and other boards,
despite the development of numerous phases and related technologies over time.
According to Gundersen, P. Erik (2019), teachers expressed that the white board surfaces
had a significant impact on student engagement in the classroom. White boards not only
improve engagement but also offer benefits for teaching and learning. White board began
replacing chalkboard in many classrooms in the 1980s. Most classroom across the country
have white boards, and teachers are reaping the benefits, which include the removal of chalk
dust, erase of writing and cleaning, and visual appeal. An important aspect embedded in the
use of any writing board is the need to erase or clean the board for reuse. While this
relatively easy board cleaning may present a problem where there is a frequent and periodic
need to clean the board, for this reason, several designs have developed to aid the cleaning
the boards through an automated means with the major good of reducing the labor involved
as well as providing more effective and efficient tool.

1.2. Background of the Study

Manual Whiteboard cleaning has been the traditional method, which involves the use of
erasers primarily done by the board user. The Development of Smart Whiteboard Cleaner in
Classroom Application is a system that is generally used to facilitate the process of
Whiteboard Cleaning. (S.B. Alias, S.B.M. Rawi, M.B. Mohamad, 2020). The idea grows
after viewing the manual process of Whiteboard cleaning by teachers in ways to provide
some comfort for teachers while cleaning the Whiteboard.

1.2.1. Remote Control Motorized Cleaners

Many researchers and testing have been done on Whiteboard from a long time.
According to S. Akhter, A. Saha, and M. Ahmad (2015) Automatic Whiteboard Clearer can
solve the time-consuming and tedious process to erase the writings from the board with
duster manually. Automatic Whiteboard clearer will reduce the time and the effort. It takes
around 6second to clean the board smoothly.

1.2.2. Automatic White Board Clearer Using Mobile Phone

In the teaching field, whiteboard, duster, and marker are crucial elements. To erase the
writing from large size boards manually with a duster is a time-consuming task. It breaks the
concentration of both lecturers and listeners. S. Chavan et.al (2019) represents the design and
construction of automatic whiteboard clearer using Mobile Phone, an android application
develops which consists of button to move the shaft in a forward and backward direction and
to stop it the Automatic White Clearer reduces the time and effort required.

1.3. Statement of the Problem

1.3.1. General Problem

The researchers encountered and observed that cleaning the markers on the
board is time consuming. What we always observed that teachers and students need
to clean every corner of the board for writing a lesson and solving the answer
questions. Teacher’s time and energy is wasted in cleaning the board during 60
minutes-2 hours lecture. And sometimes student was getting bored, stray from the

topic and start unnecessary noise to their seatmate. So, after cleaning, teachers need
to pay more attention to students to discuss the topic again.

1.3.2. Specific Problem

This research aims to design and construct a Smart Whiteboard Clearer as

an alternative to “duster” to reduce the effort of the board users as well as to introduce an
automation system to the classroom. Specially, the following questions would be answer:

1.) What would be the appropriate design to achieve the desired function, and
specification of a remote control on a board eraser?
2.) What materials need to be considered to have a durable design for the concept?
3.) How to evaluate the function and specification that must be used in the desired
design?
4.) Is there a significant difference between the Manual Whiteboard Cleaning and the
Smart Whiteboard Clearer in the terms of:
a) Time
b) Distance

1.4. Objective of the Study

1.4.1. General Objective

The mention statements and arguments above were the main objectives for the
design and construct a smart whiteboard cleaner. The following function of the design study
is to erase the board writings without having an interruption of the discussion of the class
and lessen the time-consuming when cleaning.

1.4.2. Specific Objective

The study specifically aims to:

1) To design a smart whiteboard cleaner that has functionality of erasing right and left
movements.

2) To written word can be easily cleaned and is not a waste of time.

3) To do cleaning work merely by using a Smart Whiteboard Cleaner.
4) To evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of the movement of Whiteboard Cleaner.

5) To design of an adjustable distance between eraser and the board so it can be moved
closer or farther from the board and can also be manually controlled by the user.

6) To provide manual control, the carriage would be equipped with a manual override
that allows the user to move the eraser carriage along the track by the switch.

1.5. Significance of the Study

The present study will be beneficial for the following:

Teacher. This research will be beneficial for the teachers, especially the high school and
college teachers, who use whiteboard as writing materials for discussion with students.

School. This research may help the school benefit from the use of smart whiteboard cleaner
as an alternative to manual whiteboard cleaning.

Students. This research will be beneficial for the students especially the Engineering
Student to give them opportunity to use this knowledge for inside the classes and for future
project references by studying this type of study about smart whiteboard cleaner.

Future Researchers. This study will benefit future researchers in that information and
design concept will help them gain further knowledge and serve as a source for their future
studies.

1.6. Scope and Limitations

1.6.1 Scope

COLLEGEOF ENGINEERING

This study primarily focused on the design and construct of a Smart (automated)
whiteboard eraser. The researcher will gather materials and components that were used in the
design of the smart cleaner. The researcher will have the specific duty of erasing the writing
on the board. It will have a remote control as its main control for the eraser’s mode and
functions and for the teacher’s desired part to be used. The research function is to erase from
its original position right to its full extension of the design.
 The eraser would be mounted on a carriage that moves along a rail or track
system that is affixed to the top edge of the whiteboard. The carriage would
be driven by a motor that can move it back and forth along the track, allowing
the user to adjust the distance between the eraser and the board.
 The motor would be controlled by an Arduino that receives input from a
sensor that detects the distance of the eraser and the board and also Arduino
would use the sensor reading to adjust the position of the eraser to the
distance of marker.
 The eraser itself could be made of a soft material, such as felt or foam, that
can easily remove dry-erase marker ink from the board without scratching.

1.6.1 Limitations
The researcher limit and focus on the function and specifications of the study. We
will not attach ourselves in the calculation of some materials that researcher is using. There
is a possibility the teacher is not able to use the remote control when too far away from the
white board. The researcher limits the function of sensor especially the hand gesture or
movement of the person, the sensor will not detect the motion of person when user use the
smart (automatic) whiteboard eraser.
