DIT 0411 MOBILE COMPUTING
PRACTICAL LAB 1: SETTING UP A LAN
Instructions:
You will be required to prepare a one-page report summarizing your learning activities

Objectives
To establish a local Area Network consisting of three personal computers running the
Linux/Windows operating system, and a switch

1. Physically connect computers


2. Configure IP addresses using ipconfig
3. Verify communication among the machines using ping command

Required Equipment
1. Three PCs/Laptops
2. PC’s/Laptops should be equipped with Network Interface Cards
3. One switch
4. Cables

Setting up a LAN
You will be required to create a LAN of not less than 5 devices and report on the following:
 The network type and Architecture. Give a diagrammatic representation of the network
 Services provided by your network, with evidence of testing
 The topology used
 Computer and Network Operating Systems used for the LAN
 Cable types used
 Access methods and Protocols used

Reporting: Each students will perform the following tasks and explain:
1. How they did them.
2. Why they were/weren’t successful.
3. What they observed.

Setup a Physical LAN


1. First, determine which cables are necessary for the available hardware
2. Insert one end of the cable into the Hub/Switch and the other end of the cable into the host
computer.
3. Connect all host computers to the Hub/Switch as in the figure below

Use Packet Internet or Inter-Network Groper (ping) command to verify communication among the
machines.
ping 192.168.1.2
ping 192.168.1.3
Use the traceroute (TRACERT) diagnostic utility and report your findings
