MTHS 222 INFO ON EXAM 2022

The exam covers all the work: Study Units 1-4.

Self study units are included too.

Theorems
Know the wording of all the theorems and definitions that are found in the study sections and be able to
formulate them, interpret them, and apply them.

You must be able to prove the following theorems:

 You should also be able to prove Theorem 2 for the kernel of a linear transformation, not only for the null space of a matrix (compare p 241 just
before sketch.)
Multichoice
There are 20 multichoice questions, each counting 2 marks. They test mainly insight, into both theory (about
14 marks) and applications (about 26 marks). (Some questions are “theoretical applications” –bit of both.)
Longer questions
The longer questions add up to 60 marks, of which about 12 marks are direct theory questions (theorems /
definitions). The other questions may include theoretical aspects to a greater or lesser extent.
Composition of the paper (1st opportunity)
The exact marks allocation per study unit cannot be given, because many questions contain aspects of more
than one unit. The following is therefore just an attempt at an approximate composition:
 Orthogonality: 25 marks
 Partition matrices & LU factorization: 12 marks
 Diagonalization, symmetric matrices & quadratic forms: 26 marks
 General vector spaces: 37 marks
