Demography The study of human
populations – their size,
composition and distribution
across space – and the
process through which
populations change.
Births, deaths and
migration are the “big
three” of demography,
jointly producing
population stability or
change.
Birth
rate The average annual
number of births during
a year per 1000 persons
in the population.
Death
The ratio of deaths to the
rate population of a particular
period of time, usually
calculated as the number of
deaths per one thousand
people.
Life
Expectancy
The length of life the
average new born will
enjoy
Demographic
transition A singular historical period
during which mortality and
fertility rates decline from
high to low levels in a
particular country or region
Demographic Transition
Associated with Pre-modern
Stage 1 times
High birth rates

High death rates

Very slow population growth

Demographic Transition
Associated with Agricultural
th
Revolution of the 18 century
Stage 2
High birth rates

Low death rates

Rapid rise in population growth

Population
explosion Increasingly rapid rise
in population as the
gap between deaths
and births grows wider
Demographic Transition
Began towards the end of the 19th
Stage 3 century

Declining birth rates

Declining death rates

Continued rise in population
growth
Demographic Transition
Current global population i.e.
Stage 4 South Korea and the US
Lowest birth rate

Declining death rates

Population decline sets in rapidly

Demographic Transition
Represents the future global
Stage 5 population or countries i.e. Italy
and Japan
Birth rate falls below death rate
Death rate remains low and w/
ageing population
Natural decrease in the population
