Module learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the key principles of public health and sustainability.

Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of global, national, and local forces on public
health issues and challenges including the impact of climate on health.

Identify epidemiological/social/cultural/environmental and economic factors that can impact on

health and wellbeing.

Identify how global, national, and regional responses address public health challenges
including climate change and ecological disturbance.

Demonstrate knowledge of the roles of people and agencies working to promote public health
considering internationalization, equality, diversity, and inclusion
Assessment
Summative assessment:
A 3,000 Word Report (Component A) A maximum of 3,000-word report that
discusses a contemporary global public health challenge, with reference to its
impact on a specific population. This population could identify by age, gender,
sexual orientation/identity, race, ethnicity, culture, disability (seen or unseen),
socioeconomic status or another demographic characteristic. The report will also
identify and discuss relevant policies, interventions, or strategies toward
addressing the public health challenge, at both a regional, national, and global
level.

Title: A report exploring how the climate and ecological crisis impacts on
public health challenges within a population from a global national, societal
and individual level.

5 Planning stages before you start to write your report

Step 1. Choose an area of public health that you would like to explore these could
be
Obesity
Diabetes type 2
Sexual health STIs
Smoking
Drugs
Alcohol
Mental health
Respiratory disease
Cardiovascular disease
Anti-microbial resistances (antibiotic resistance)
Pandemic / zoonotic disease
Child dental decay – predisposition adult CVC
Homelessness
Tuberculosis
HIV
Malnutrition
Malaria
Ebola
Zika

Step 2. Identify what aspect of environmental or ecological damage makes this

public health problem worse i.e. air pollution making respiratory disease more
problematic. This will help you identify and recognise the role of the environment.
Step 3. What factors makes this public health challenge worse? Our advice is to
complete a mind map (for planning only) to list all the areas for consideration.
Society and economic factors – how do known socio/economic determinants of
health / health inequalities impact on this public health challenge.
Which population groups are affected consider age, gender, sexual
orientation/identity, race, ethnicity, culture, disability (seen or unseen),
socioeconomic status or another demographic characteristic such as social class,
earnings / education / housing / employment / unemployment etc
These will help you to recognise which populations or groups of people are at most
risk and the impact it has on them and society.
Choose a population group and choose two societal and two economic factors
to explore in your report.

Step 4. Consider the context of the public challenge for example:

Define the public health challenge (what is it)
What is the extent of the problem – consider epidemiology / statistics
How does it affect individuals / health services- consider health needs assessment?
Consider costs to social care / long term health cost / education and economic
impact
Consider the remit of public health and health promotion and concepts such as
holism, biomedical, ecological, psychosocial.
Step 5. Examine the evidence base (literature) to support why this is a factor
and to recognise what measures can be used to approach it.
Search the literature using library databases (avoid google) use recommended texts
and reading list.
As you gather knowledge from the evidence base you might start to align them to the
models of public health. This will be useful in the writing stage of the report where
you refer to the models in relation to the public health challenge.
Explore the roles of people and agencies who work in the promotion of public health.
What does the evidence say about how they can address the challenge?
What local / national / international government policies exist towards funding,
legislation, and guidance.

Writing the report

You will aim to answer the following in the report:

What is the public health challenge?
Who does it affect and why?
What can be done and what might need to be done?
How might this be done and who will be involved?

How to structure the report:

Title page – should be informative and descriptive concisely stating the topic of the
report
Executive summary – An executive summary should outline the key problem and
objectives, and then cover the main findings and key recommendations.
Table of contents – see this link for how to do this https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=gxTNbc5WkSQ
Introduction – Why have you chosen the topic; how does it relate to climate change
/ ecological crisis. What is the extent of the public health challenge, what is the
impact it has on individuals and society? What factors have you chosen to explore
further and why.
Main body of the report - broken down into sections / subheadings based on the
factors you have chosen to explore.
This will be where you explore each of the factors you have chosen in light of policy
interventions and strategies making reference to public health models to inform you
of potential solutions to the public health challenge.
Conclusion / recommendations – summarise the outcomes of the report and
actions that are required. Summarise the key actions from the individual through to
international government response and challenges faced.
