1 PROJECT DESCRIPTION
1.1 General
ENI has been awarded the Zubair project for the development of an oil field
(ZUBAIR FIELD) in joint venture with Occidental, Korea Gas and Missan Oil
COMPANY (as state partner), with Eni as operator.
The Zubair Field is located in the southern area of Iraq, 20 km from Basra city.
The structure of the Zubair Field is a relatively gentle anticline oriented NNW -
SE, approximately 60 km long and 10-15 km wide.
The Zubair project is a “brown field project” in which two main phases can be
defined:
1.2 Objective
The primary objective of this document is to define the minimum requirements for
the design, manufacturing, delivery, installation and testing of the FIBER OPTIC
CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES for installation between the following
SITES:
• Zubair Degassing Station;
• Zubair Mishrif Degassing Station;
• Hammar Degassing Station;
• Hammar Mishrif Degassing Station;
• Rafidiya Degassing Station;
• Safwan flow station;
• New Tankfarm;
• Field Office District;
• Fiscal Metering Site (If located outside DGS);
The FIBER OPTIC CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES shall be the
physical support to the WAN over FOC System that provides communications for
voice, data, security and monitoring/detection services and between Zubair Field
Degassing Stations, New Tankfarm and FOD SITE.
The FIBER OPTIC CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES shall be installed
by CONTRACTOR between Degassing Stations, New Tankfarm and FOD SITE,
along new main oil transfer pipeline.
All CONTRACTOR ITEMS necessary for the safe and satisfactory operation of
the system shall be included notwithstanding exclusions or omissions from the
specification.
2.2 Definition

CONTRACTOR ITEMS and systems should normally comply with the relevant
national and international recommendations of the ITU and should be type-
approved by the national authority for use in the application proposed.
4 OVERALL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 General
This specification details the design and characteristics for the FIBER OPTICAL
CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES used for Zubair Field.
The FIBER OPTICAL CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES used for
Zubair Field shall be used for data and voice connection between DGS, New
Tankfarm, Power Plant, Gas Treatment, Sea Water Intake, remote manifolds and
FOD SITE.
WAN over FOC, pipeline monitoring and integrity signals (includes leak detection
and third party intrusion detection) shall be exchanged between sites through
backbone of FIBER OPTICAL CABLE FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES.
For that purpose, four cables shall be laid along main transfer pipeline:
• n° 2 (two) cable shall be used for WAN over FOC
• n° 2 (two) cables shall be used for pipeline monitoring system (FOPIMS)
This section gives the minimum requirements, reference standards, tests and
supply conditions for the supply of the fibre optical cables for Zubair Field.
5 TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
5.1 General
FIBER OPTICAL CABLES FOR MAIN TRANSFER PIPELINES (here called Type
1 FOC and Type 2 FOC) shall be supplied by SUBCONTRACTOR and shall be
suitable for direct buried installation together with Oil pipelines, Gas pipelines,
water pipelines and multiphase trunklines.
Type 1 FOC and Type 2 FOC quantity shall be defined by CONTRACTOR during
engineering design considering at least 10% of spare quantities plus quantities
above considered plus at least 10m for each manhole during installation.
Type 1 FOC and Type 2 FOC shall be included in the FOC SUBCONTRACTOR
scope of supply.
Type 1 FOC shall be used for WAN over FOC system, while Type 2 FOC shall be
used for pipeline monitoring system (FOPIMS).
FIBER OPTICAL CABLE Joint Splice Enclosures (here called Type 1 Enclosure
and Type 2 Enclosure) shall be supplied by SUBCONTRACTOR and shall be
suitable for direct buried installation. Type 1 Enclosure shall be used for Type 1
FOC splice enclosures while Type 2 Enclosure shall be used for Type 2 FOC
splice enclosures.
The Fibre Optical Cables Type 1 (Type 1 FOC) shall be of Corrugated Steel Tape
Armoured, Loose Tubes Single Mode type (SM), suitable for direct burial
installation. The number of cable cores shall be 96
The tubes shall be filled with filling compound and stranded, together with fibres,
around a central dielectric strength member (FRP) to form a compact and circular
core. Loose tube with 12 or 24 fibres shall be acceptable.
Around the loose tube and fillers, polyester tape shall be applied. Over the cable

core a 1 intermediate black PVC sheath shall be applied.
Over the 1st intermediate sheath, to prevent cable from petrochemical and
chemical compounds an inner jacket of Aluminium tape (coated on both side with
a copolymer), HDPE and Nylon (PA) shall be applied.
Each single mode Optical fibre shall be designed to provide good performance at
both 1310nm and/or 1550nm. The geometric and transmission characteristics
shall fully comply with ITU-T-G-652D (06/2005).
Colour coding and labelling shall be according to IEC 60304. The colour-coding
system shall be discernible throughout the design life of the cable.
Cable markings shall be printed on the outer fibre cable jacket. The markings
shall be permanent, insoluble in water and shall be legible for the duration of the
cable life.
Markings shall be printed at intervals not exceeding 2m. The outer jacket of fibre
optical cable shall be printed as follow:
• Manufacturer name (MMMMM)
• Date of fabrication (mm/yyyy)
• Project name (Zubair Field Development Project)
• Fibre type (FO24 SM)
The fibre optical cable’s mechanical characteristics shall comply with the
following:
Drum length shall be no shorter than 4000 m. The “FO Cable Drum Schedule”
shall be provided by CONTRACTOR.
The service life for fibre Optical cable shall be 25 years minimum.
F.O.C. SUBCONTRACTOR shall provide the Fibre Optical Cable Technical Data
Sheets for supplied FO cable and the “Recommendations for FO Cable
Installation and Laying”.

The Fibre Optical Cables Type 2 (Type 2 FOC) shall be of Corrugated Steel Tape

The splice enclosures shall be suitable for a single mode FOC according to the
“Fibre Optical Cable Accessories” Data Sheets indicated. In every splice
enclosure, the cables shall be marked upon entry indicating the destination of
each cable end.
The service life for splice enclosures for aboveground and underground
applications shall be 25 years minimum.
The splicing enclosures for all FOCs covered by this Specification are included in
the scope of supply of the F.O.C. Vendor.
Joint splice closure quantities for FOC Type 1 shall be defined during engineering
design phase with following criteria: n°1 joint splice closure shall be considered

The splicing enclosures for all FOCs covered by this Specification are included in
the scope of supply of the F.O.C. Vendor.
Joint splice closure quantities for FOC Type 2 shall be defined during engineering
design phase with following criteria: n°1 joint splice closure shall be considered
every 4 km plus 10% spare of the total quantities.
6 DOCUMENTATION
6.1 General
Construction Drawings and Documentation shall include, but not limited to:
Equipment service manuals shall permit the maintenance and repair of the
equipment by trained and qualified technicians. The manuals shall contain circuit
diagrams, part lists, test and alignment procedures and measurement
parameters required to ensure that the equipment may operate within the
intended design of type approval specifications.
Equipment and system documentation shall include, but not limited to:
• User manuals
• System operation manuals
• Maintenance procedures
• Equipment technical and service manuals
7 INSTALLATION
For Fiber Optic Cables installation please refer to document n°
00250600BCST49051 “Technical specification for Fiber Optic Cable Installation”
and to document n° 00250600BCDQ49101 “Typical Installation Details for FOC”.
SUBCONTRACTOR shall supply test equipments for the normal operation and
maintenance of the system. These test equipments shall be different and
separate from the test equipments used by CONTRACTOR to perform his
installation and commissioning works.
Test equipments shall be delivered in a new and unused condition directly to
COMPANY and shall not be used for installation and commissioning activities.
All test equipments shall have a valid calibration labels and certification traceable
to known international standards.
9.1 General
Each particular cable length shall be factory acceptance tested and shall be
delivered together with the respective test reports.
• Attenuation tests of each fibre at 1310 +30/-15 nm and at 1550 +30/-70
nm with OTDR according to IEC 60793-1 (Parts 1-40 to 1-49)
• Dispersion tests of each fibre at 1310 and 1550 nm according to IEC
60793-1 (Parts 1-40 to 1-49) shall be performed.
• Zero dispersion slope shall be performed.
Dimensional Tests
Dimensions shall also be tested random (one for each cable length) during the
manufacturing process.
After cable installation activities at site, a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) will be
carried out in order to verify the full operational functionality of the system and
witnessed by COMPANY personnel who shall certify the acceptance of the
system.
The SAT will be conducted at first on stand-alone system equipments and then
on networked equipments, where applicable.
Prior to the SAT activities, SAT procedures will be supplied by
SUBCONTRACTOR for CONTRACTOR/COMPANY approval.
All SAT tests shall be documented with the result obtained and their success or
failure. Test results shall be submitted to COMPANY prior to clearance of the
SAT Test results shall include a list of test equipment used with last calibration
date and the acceptable period between calibrations.
