ARELLANO UNIVERSITY

GRADE 10 SCIENCE
DLP 2: DNA STRUCTURE

VICTORINO, JOHN DANIEL

10- Curie

Objective: Identify the proper arrangement of DNA subunits and

nitrogenous base pairs set in different colours.
Materials: Colouring materials, writing instruments
Procedure:
Create your own model of a DNA strand using recyclable
materials or things found at home. Your model must represent the
proper arrangement of DNA showing the subunits and
nitrogenous base pairs.

Cite why you used the chosen materials to make your DNA
model. Relate the materials to the parts of DNA with the same
characteristics.

Properly identify the nitrogenous base pairing present in a DNA

molecule. Label the DNA structures using the following letters and
colors.
Cytosine (C) – Red
Guanine (G) – Green
Adenine (A) – Blue
Thymine (T) – Yellow
Phosphate group (P)- Purple
Ribose group (R) – Brown
GUIDE QUESTIONS:

1. What are three parts of nucleotide?

There are 3 parts of Nucleotide

Deoxyribose: is a monosaccharide with idealized formula H−−− (CHOH) ₃−H.

Its name indicates that it is a deoxy sugar, meaning that it is derived from the
sugar ribose by loss of a hydroxyl group.

Phosphate Group: a functional group characterized by a phosphorus atom

bonded to four oxygen atoms.

Nitrogenous Base: are nitrogen-containing biological compounds that form

nucleosides, which, in turn, are components of nucleotides, with all of these monomers
constitute the basic building blocks of nucleic acids.

2. What bonds exist between DNA subunits and nitrogenous bases?

The bonds exist between DNA subunits and Nitrogenous bases is Covalent and
Hydrogen Bonds, Nitrogenous is one of the components of Nucleotide which two
hydrogen bonds are present between Adenine and Thymine and three hydrogen
bonds are present between Guanine and Cytosine. Hydrogen Bond binds the
Nitrogen bases between the two strands of DNA.

3. What are the importance of DNA in an organism (give at least 3 importance)?

3 examples of importance of DNA in an organism:

- It conveys genetic information or hereditary elements from parents to offspring.

- It includes the guidelines required for an organism to grow and survive.

-It conveys all the genetic information for the function and growth of an organism
to reproduce.
