IEE 474 Homework 5

Problem 1 (20 Points)

A process is in control with 𝑥̅̅ = 100, 𝑅( = 2.30, and 𝑛 = 5. The process specifications are
at 95 ± 10. The quality characteristic has a normal distribution.
a) Estimate the potential process capability.
b) Estimate the actual process capability.
c) How much could the fallout in the process be reduced if the process were corrected to
operate at the normal specification?

Problem 2 (20 Points)

Consider the hole diameter measurement data. Estimate process capability using 𝑥̅ and 𝑅
charts. Suppose that we know the sample size 𝑛 = 5, 𝑥̅̅ = 0.00109, 𝑅( = 0.00635.
Please use these results to compute 𝐶! , 𝐶!" and 𝐶!# . Interpret these ratios results. We assume
that the specifications are at 0 ± 0.01.

Problem 3 (20 Points)

1 0.5
Suppose that we have 𝑝 = 2 quality characteristics. The covariance matrix Σ = 4 5 is
0.5 1
given. The in-control value of the process mean vector 𝜇 = [0,0]$ .
a) What is the inverse of this covariance matrix?
b) What is the UCL for the multi-variate control chart to monitor this process given 𝛼 =
0.05?
c) Suppose for sample 𝑥% = 1, 𝑥& = −1. Is this an out-of-control sample or not?

Problem 4 (20 Points)

Suppose the data is given in HW5Prob4.xlsx. The data contains 20 samples. There are two
quality characteristics, the tensile strength and the diameter. Please construct the multivariate
control chart by JMP.

Problem 5 (20 points + 10 points) Analyze the data collected in the 23 design shown below.

Design Factors
Run A B C Response
1 (1) -1 -1 -1 8
2 b -1 1 -1 12
3 a 1 -1 -1 10
4 ab 1 1 -1 13
5 c -1 -1 1 11
6 bc -1 1 1 12
7 ac 1 -1 1 9
8 abc 1 1 1 14
1) Please calculate all main effect, all 2-factor interaction effect, and all 3-factor
interaction effects in details.
2) Please make a cube plot of the data.
3) Please use JMP to compute all main effect, all 2-factor interaction effect, and all 3-
factor interaction effects in details.
4) (Bonus 10 points) Can you draw the 2-factor interaction plot of A and B manually?
(Not using JMP)

Problem 6: (Bonus 20 points)

Given an experimental design with three factors 𝑋% , 𝑋& , and 𝑋' where each factor has
two levels. Consider the regression model containing 3 main effects and 3 two-factor
interaction effects. Derive each regression coefficient is one-half of the effect estimate.
