Assignment 6: Composite beams

1. Explain Composite beams with its advantages.

2. A composite T beam of rectangular section is made up for a pre-tensioned rib 100 mm wide
and 800 mm deep, and a cast in situ slab 800 mm wide and 150 mm thick having a modulus
of elasticity of 35 kN/m2 for both precast and cast in situ elements. The precast beam is
reinforced with high tensile wires (fu=1600 N/mm2) having an area of 800mm2 and located
100 from the soffit of the beam. Estimate resultant stress at top and bottom of the composite
section. The density of concrete is 24 kN/m3. The beam supports a live load of 3 kN/m over a
span of 6m. Assume loss due to prestressed is 20%.
a) Assume same modulus of Elasticity
b) Ratio of modulus of Elasticity from cast-in-situ to precast is 0.9
3. A rectangular pretensioned beam has a breadth of 100 mm and depth of 230mm, and the
prestress after all losses have occurred is 12 N/mm2 at soffit and zero at top. The beam is
incorporated in a composite beam by casting a top flange of breadth of 300 mm and depth of
50mm. calculate the maximum distributed live load that can be supported on a simply
supported span of 4.5m, without any tensile stress occurring.
4. A composite bridge deck is made up of an in situ cast slab 120 mm thick and 750 mm wide
and symmetrical I-section of precast beams having the flange width 200 mm and 110 mm deep.
Depth of Web 500 mm and thickness of web 75 mm. A modulus of elasticity of 30 kN/m2. If
the differential shrinkage is 100 x 10-6 units, Estimate the shrinkage stresses developed in the
pre cast and cast in situ units.
5. A composite T beam of rectangular section is made up for a pre-tensioned rib 120 mm wide
and 500 mm deep, and a cast in situ slab 600 mm wide and 80 mm thick having a modulus of
elasticity of 35 kN/m2 for both precast and cast in situ elements. The rib is prestressed by a
straight cable having an eccentricity 50mm and carrying initial force 250 kN. Assume loss due
to pressed is 20%. Calculate the resultant deflection if the beam supports a live load of 3 kN/m
over a span of 6m for unpropped condition.
