Assignment 4: Deflection of Prestressed Concrete beam

1. Why it is necessary to control the deflection. Explain the factors influencing deflection in
prestressed concrete members.

2. A prestressed concrete beam spanning over 10m is of rectangular section 200mm wide &
350mm deep. The beam is prestressed by a parabolic cable having an eccentricity of 100mm
below the Centroidal axis at the center of span and eccentricity of 40mm above the Centroidal
axis at the support sections. The initial force in the cable is 400kN. The beam supports a udl
live load of 4kN/m and central concentrated load of 40kN. Ec=37kN/mm2, allowing 20% loss
in prestress, estimate long term deflection assuming creep coefficient as 1.8.

3. A simply supported prestressed concrete beam having rectangular section 150x500mm, spans
over 8m. The beam is prestressed by a straight cable at eccentricity 125mm. Working load over
beam is 12kN/m. Determine central deflection of beam at
i) Transfer stage: Prestressing force 200kN and characteristic cube strength 35MPa.
ii) Final stage: Prestressing force 275kN and characteristic cube strength 45MPa.

4. A rectangular concrete beam of cross section 200mm wide and 300mm deep is simply
supported over a span of 6.5m and is prestressed by means of a symmetrical parabolic cable,
at a distance of 75mm from the bottom of the beam at mid span and zero at the support sections.
If the force in the cable is 400kN and the modulus of elasticity of concrete is 38kN/m2,
calculate the deflection at mid-span when the beam is supporting its own weight & the
concentrated load which must be applied at mid-span to restore it to the level of supports.
5. A concrete beam with a cross section 150 mm wide X 300 mm deep is Prestressed by a
parabolic cable carrying an effective prestressing force 350 kN. The span of the beam is 8 m.
The cable has an eccentricity of 75 mm at the center and 25mm at the supports. Take Ec = 38
kN/mm2. The beam supports a concentrated load of 20 kN at centers in addition to the self-
weight. find
i. Short term deflection at centers under prestress, self-weight.
ii. Long term deflection assuming 20 % loss and creep co-efficient as 1.6
