 With this initiative, this Office has taken up the work of

preparing geo-referenced digital map of each ward in the
Capital Cities of the country showing detailed layout of
buildings, houses, lanes, by lanes, road network and major
land mark features. Based on satellite imagery and
collection of information on population by conducting
field survey, census enumeration blocks are identified for
use by the Enumerators during House listing and Housing
Census as well as population enumeration during 2011
census. This Project is implemented with the support
from SOI who have been entrusted with the job of
digitization of imagery and linking of field data.
The Progress made so far
• As on date, out of 2073 wards in 33 Capital Cities,
field verification of all wards have been completed.
• Finalization of digital maps and linking of attribute
data is also completed by for use in 2nd Phase
Population Enumeration 2011.
Availability of Town Maps

Most of the town maps showing ward

boundary procured are old and the extent
and boundary of towns usually changed
Number of Wards also undergoes change
in many cases. Therefore, as like earlier
censuses, Town Maps are required to be
updated
The Constraints
All the Capital cities has inherent expansion in horizontal
& vertical directions
Resulting change in ward boundaries and number of
wards. So the ward boundaries and CEB’s are bound to
change
For example Jaipur 66 ward in 2001 - 70 now
Delhi 134 Wards in 2001 - 298 now
Hyderabad 35 wards in 2001 – 100 now
Bangalore Wards 100 in 2001 - 198 now
Bhopal Wards 66 in 2001 and 70 now
Chennai 155 Divisions in 2001 200 now
and so on ………

.
The Ward Maps
The digital maps are prepared using high
resolution Satellite Imagery procured from SOI
followed by field survey for verification of each
building structure and collection of information
on each house/building. Each building structure
is drawn as a polygon as seen from the top by the
satellite.
