To whom it may concern,

I am applying for a teaching position in elementary education. I am a currently a senior at Alma

College and am working towards finishing my two semesters of student teaching in both
Elementary Education and Special Education. I am graduating with a double major in
Elementary Education and Special Education. I wish to teach because it will provide me with an
opportunity to inspire students, to lead, and collaborate for the betterment of the classroom
environment.

I am a firm believer that students will not learn if they are not inspired. I plan to accomplish
this by incorporating experiential learning into my curriculum and creating a classroom
atmosphere in which students are excited to enter and learn. I hope to encourage my students to
find a passion for learning that I was able to find in my education. As a part of my educational
experience, I have worked in elementary and middle school classrooms, taught various lessons,
and developed strong leadership skills and how to manage a classroom.

I believe in classroom programs that offer opportunities for children to be actively engaged in
their own learning. I believe that active engagement occurs when children are presented with
age, culturally, and individually appropriate instruction that is child-led and hands-on. I have
participated in many classrooms throughout my education at Alma College. Two experiences
that impacted me greatly are my placements in Pine Avenue Elementary and Alma Middle
School. These experiences taught me to be flexible and adaptable, consider the needs of children
outside of academics, and to value the different perspectives families and communities bring to
the classroom experience.

In addition to my educational training, I have spent time serving in various leadership roles on
campus. I have been the captain for the swim and dive team and helped to recruit swimmers to
come to Alma College. I am able to help prospective students and their families plan the next
step in their educational path. I think this is another way that will help me to create an inclusive
and caring classroom climate. I am able to make a recruit feel comfortable on their visit at Alma.
In the same way I make these recruits feel comfortable I will be able to foster that same type of
environment in my classroom.
