13. If a ball is dropped from rest and falls 8m to the ground, what is the speed just before it hits the ground?
Take acceleration due to gravity to be 10m/s/s).
14. What acceleration would be needed by a car speeding up from 10m/s to 15m/s in 80m?

15. A car accelerates uniformly from 5m/s to 15m/s taking 7.5 seconds. How far did it travel during this
period.

16. Initial velocity 5m/s, final velocity 36km/hr, acceleration 1.25m/s/s. Distance?

17. A cycle accelerates from rest at a constant acceleration of 0.4m/s/s for 20 seconds then stops pedalling
and slowed to standstill at constant deceleration over distance of 260m. Calculate:
a. Distance travelled by cyclist in the first 20seconds
b. The speed of the cyclist at end of this time

18. A cyclist is travelling at 7m/s, then accelerates at 2.5m/s/s for 15 seconds.

a. How far did they travel during this time?
b. What was the final speed after 15 seconds?
Solutions
1. v = u + at ⇒ a = ( v – u ) ÷ t ⇒ a = (30 – 10) ÷ 5 ⇒ a = 4 m s-2.
2. v = u + at 0 = 60 + a (120) a = - 0.5 m s-2
3. v 2 = u 2 + 2as
0 = 25 +2(-1.47) s or s = 213 m
4. v2= u2 + 2as ⇒ (12.2)2 = 0 +2a(25)
a = 2.98 m s–2
5.
(i) v = u + at
50 = 0 + 0.5t
t = 50/0.5 = 100 s
(ii) v2 = u2 + 2as
0 = 502 + 2a(500)
a = −2500/1000 = − 2.5 m s-1
6.
a. a= (v-u)/ t a= 2m/s/s
b. s= ½ (u+v)t s= 221m
7.
a. s= ½(u+v)t ⇒ t=2s/(u+v) t=43sec
b. v= u + at ⇒ a= (v-u)/t a=-0.93m/s/s
8. v= u+at ⇒ a=(v-u)/t a= 1.5m/s/s
9. v= u+at ⇒ a=(v-u)/t a= -2.5m/s/s
10.
a. v= u+at ⇒ a=(v-u)/t a= 0.45m/s/s
b. v= u+at v=7.9m/s
11.
a. S= ½ (u+v)t s=15m b. -0.13m/s/s
12. S= ½ (u+v)t s=1500m
13. v2=u2 + 2as v=12.64m/s
14. v2=u2 + 2as ⇒ a= v2-u2/2s a=0.78m/s/s
15. S= ½ (u+v)t s=75m
16. S= ½ (u+v)t s=22 503.12m
17.
a. S=ut + 1/2at2 s=80m
b. V= u+at v=8m/s OR s=1/2 (u+v)t s=8m/s
