Integrated design II

Forms of Adaptation
‘Adapting old buildings constructs a future on the past. Every intervention sets down another
layer of history and, whether it sits politely or is something bold, each action presents a
challenge and should demonstrate the transformational power of well-understood design.’
To crate a good Building in the historic environment is not only defined by traditional
Qualities or materials; it can be defined on by finding a solution through form, geometry,
texture and color, and creating them into historic collages.

Repairing, Updating and Adding

to adapt a building can be as well called as a construction as a new building, because it can be
refined by having a good concept. At their simplest, renovation projects call for updated
services and some rearrangement of internal spaces; at his kind of pace it is hard to keep the
building’s fundamental history intact. Cardigan Castle in Wales is taken as an example as a
building that followed All of these ideas of adaptation ideas through an initial condition survey
and an appraisal to determine a future use for the castle, which is a Scheduled Ancient
Monument with six separately listed Grade II* buildings within its curtilage. Initial work
included repairing the castle’s curtain walls. And then the buildings within the walls were
repaired, conserved and upgraded with new holiday accommodation, small-business workspace,
conference facilities and a restaurant added, the latter cantilevering out above the old walls.

Architectural Solutions
From a positive perspective, there is a huge body of knowledge and techniques that can
be shared between commercial, residential and religious projects, and an opportunity to
embrace new materials alongside the traditional, without being bound by convention or dogma.

Insertions
Elegantly designed elements inserted within original structures prove time and again to
be the solution for old buildings that need a fresh start, particularly those that have decayed or
fallen into a ruinous state. As a history the building’s interior had undergone substantial
change, which had destroyed much of the original fabric. As A result an insertion of a very
different kind was made into the shell of a former grain threshing mill in the Scottish Borders.
Weavings
Despite the possibility of insertion many buildings try to create a new idea that has a large
difference in material, method of construction, and era of style.
