Opinion essay about reality shows

A Reality Show is a genre of a television show that documents real-life situations,

usually with people who are not related to acting or appearing on TV; unknown people.

They tend to be based in competitions where participants are eliminated from the program,

either by judges or spectators.

Personally, the reason why this genre is extremely popular in many countries is due

to polemic and controversy. It is well known that in Reality Shows there are always issues

between the participants, besides the relationships among them. When two of them get on

‘too’ well, people start to plan their whole relationship out. I would even dare to say that

both, fans and participants, are actually quite toxic. An example of this could be La isla de las

tentaciones, which is literally based on polemics and conflicts.

To sum up, Reality Shows, indeed, are that mainstream because of the polemic they

generate. Spectators love watching people coming into conflict with each other, even more if

it is happening live and direct.
