INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTING SKILLS ASSIGNMENT

Please note that this is the first of four tasks that will form your total assignment score. Your
assignment will have a total of 20% of the final examination mark.

ASSIGNMENT TASK 1

OBJECTIVE:

 To explore and familiarize yourself with the Windows 10 operating system and its features.
 To use Microsoft formatting tools to develop an assignment

INSTRUCTIONS

Write a report to document how you executed the tasks outlined below.

TASKS:

1. Start by familiarizing yourself with the desktop. Take a look at the taskbar, Start menu, and
the desktop icons. Take a screen shot and label the taskbar, Start menu, and the desktop
icons
2. Open the Windows Settings by clicking the Start menu and then the gear icon. Take a look at
the various settings available and explore them to see what options are available.
3. Customize the Start menu by pinning some of your favorite apps or removing the ones you
don't use. To do this, right-click on an app in the Start menu and select "Pin to Start" or
"Unpin from Start."
4. Create a new folder on your desktop and name it "My Documents." Move any documents or
files that you have to this folder.
5. Take a screenshot of your desktop. Press the Windows key + PrtScn to take a screenshot of
your desktop. Find the screenshot in the Pictures folder and open it to verify that it was
captured.
6. Customize your desktop background. Right-click on your desktop and select "Personalize."
From there, you can change your desktop background and choose from various images.
7. Use the Task Manager to monitor your system's performance. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open
the Task Manager. Take a look at the various tabs to see how your system is performing.
8. Create a new user account. Open the Windows Settings and click on "Accounts." From there,
click on "Family & other users" and then "Add someone else to this PC." Follow the prompts
to create a new user account.
9. Explore the Windows File Explorer. Open File Explorer by pressing Windows key + E. Take a
look at the various folders and files on your system. Create a new folder and move some files
to it to get a better sense of how it works.
10. Use the Disk Cleanup utility to free up space on your hard drive. Type "Disk Cleanup" in the
search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. Select the drive you want to clean up, and
then select the files you want to delete.
11. Use the System Configuration utility to manage your startup programs. Type "msconfig" in
the search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. Select the "Startup" tab and uncheck any
programs you don't want to run at startup.(You might just need to show the screenshots
without amending the system configurations)
12. Use the Task Scheduler to automate tasks on your computer. Type "Task Scheduler" in the
search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. Click "Create Task" to create a new task, and
then configure the settings for the task.
13. Use the Resource Monitor to monitor your system's performance. Type "Resource Monitor"
in the search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. Take a look at the various tabs to see
how your system is performing.
14. Use the Device Manager to manage your hardware devices. Type "Device Manager" in the
search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. From there, you can update device drivers,
disable devices, and uninstall devices.
15. Use the Event Viewer to view system logs and troubleshoot issues. Type "Event Viewer" in
the search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. Take a look at the various logs to see if
there are any issues or errors that need to be addressed.
16. Use the Control Panel to manage various system settings. Type "Control Panel" in the search
bar on the taskbar and open the utility. From there, you can manage your system's display
settings, network settings, and other system settings.
17. Use the PowerShell to execute system commands and scripts. Type "PowerShell" in the
search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. From there, you can run various system
commands and scripts to manage your system.
18. Use the Remote Desktop Connection to connect to other computers remotely. Type
"Remote Desktop Connection" in the search bar on the taskbar and open the utility. From
there, you can connect to another computer and use it as if you were sitting in front of it.
19. Use the Windows Defender Security Center to manage your system's security. Type
"Windows Defender Security Center" in the search bar on the taskbar and open the utility.
From there, you can run virus scans, manage your firewall settings, and view security
reports.

FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS
The following section outlines the instructions for the presentation of the work in the above task:

1. Set the page margins to 1 inch on all sides. To do this, go to the "Page Layout" tab, click on
"Margins" and select "Normal" or "1 inch" from the dropdown menu.
2. Use a readable font such as Times New Roman or Arial, with a size of 12pt.
3. Double-space the entire document
4. Justify your work. (Please don’t go to court. I mean, use the text formatting style called
“’Justify’’)
5. Include a title page with the title of your assignment, your name, your instructor's name, the
course title, and the date. Center the title and other information on the page and use the
same font as the rest of the document.
6. Use headers to number your pages and include your last name and a short title of the
assignment on each page. To do this, go to the "Insert" tab, click on "Header" and select
"Blank (Three Columns)" from the dropdown menu. Then, type your last name and
assignment title in the left and right columns, respectively. You can also insert page numbers
by clicking on "Page Number" and selecting your preferred location and format.
7. Use headings and subheadings to organize your assignment into sections. Use bold or italic
font to distinguish headings and subheadings from regular text. You can use the "Styles"
feature to apply different levels of headings to your text.

By completing these tasks, you will become proficient in using various Windows 10 system tools and
utilities, and you'll be better equipped to manage your system and troubleshoot issues. Good luck
