This project is about the life and accomplishments of
Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

In the United States, he was a noted civil rights activist who founded the
Negro World newspaper, a shipping company called Black Star Line and
the Universal Negro Improvement Association, or UNIA, a fraternal
organization of black nationalists. As a group, they advocated for
“separate but equal” status for persons of African ancestry, and as such
they sought to establish independent Black states around the world,
notably in Liberia on the west coast of Africa.
Glossary
Nationalist: A person who strongly identifies with their own nation and vigorously
supports its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other
nations. Nationalism: An
idea and movement that holds that the nation should be congruent with the state.
Liberator: A person who liberates a person or place from imprisonment or
oppression.
Liberation movement: A liberation movement is a type of social movement that
seeks territorial independence or enhanced political or cultural autonomy (or rights of
various types) within an existing nation-state for a particular national, ethnic, or racial
group.
Philosophy: A theory or attitude that acts as a guiding principle for behaviour.
UNIA-ACL: The Universal Negro Improvement Association and African
Communities League (UNIA-ACL) is a black nationalist fraternal organization founded
by Marcus Garvey.
Black Star Line: The Black Star Line was a shipping line incorporated by Marcus
Garvey.
