Bullying and its effect on those they bully

Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against
someone or a group of people to cause distress and risk their well-being. These actions are
usually done by people who have more influence or power over someone else, or who want to
make someone else feel less powerful or helpless. Bullying is not the same as a conflict between
people like having a fight or disliking someone, even though people might bully each other
because of conflict or dislike.

Bullying can happen anywhere. It can be in schools, at home, at work, or in online social
spaces. It can be physical, verbal, or emotional, and it also includes messages, public statements,
and behavior online intended to cause distress or harm also known as cyberbullying. But no
matter what form bullying takes, the results can be the same which is severe distress and pain
for the person being bullied.

Bullying affects everyone in different ways. But there are common feelings that come up
when you are being bullied. For example, verbally through name-calling, spreading lies about
someone, excluding them from the group, or physically, kicking and punching someone. Verbal
or emotional bullying is probably much more common, and it is also harder to spot because bullies
will often say that it was only a joke. Emotional bullying also leaves no obvious marks or bruising,
but the damage can be much more serious and longer-lasting.

Bullying can harm everyone it is not just a problem for victims and bullies. Some effects
of bullying include depression, anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and loneliness, thoughts of
suicide, the inability to sleep or eat, and a loss of interest in activities that they used to once enjoy.
There is a major probability that these issues may persist even into adulthood, which is a major
concern. Other issues include decreased academic achievement and low school participation.
Bullied students are more likely to skip and drop out of school.

And to those who see or know of others being bullied, you may feel angry, fearful, guilty,
and sad. You may feel as bad as those who are being bullied. You may also feel worried that
bullying could happen to you. When bullying isn’t stopped or challenged by anyone it can create
an environment where bullying is accepted and where everyone feels powerless to stop it.
