Every culture tells its own legends and traditional tales that were handed down by
word of mouth. The stories attempt to explain an animal or human character that
has some truth even today.
In those old, old days, duck, pigeon, turkey and egret or ’garling’, as he is called,
all had some similarities. They all had short necks, stunted legs and their 5
feathers were mundane shades of gray, white, black and brown with different
designs.
The birds would gather in trees when the majestic sun waved its wand and climbed
the clouds to present the warm rays to the earth. They would swap secrets of
where to find the best meals. As the sun spread its tired arms sprinkling the 10
sky with shades of orange, red and yellow, the birds would again congregate. Egret
would often tell the others of the juiciest fruits, fat worms or delicious seeds he had
found. Although the birds followed the instructions carefully, they were never able
to find what egret had described.
The rainy season was brief that year and as a result, a severe drought 15
had the island in its grips. The birds gathered at the usual evening spot hungry
and tired from a day that was like playing hide and seek with Mother Nature.
Just then, egret appeared holding in his beak a bunch of blood red plums. The
other birds clamoured and tried to get some. Plop! The entire bunch scattered on
the ground leaving all the juices to be swallowed by the parched earth. 20
Egret promised that he would share his secret, but he did not appear the next
morning. At evening, egret appeared cackling loudly. No one spoke. They all flew
away.
Later that night the birds met in a secret place and got wise counsel from Mother
Nature. The next day turkey announced that he had found some of the 25
best worms just on the edge of Mother Nature’s private garden.
The other birds waited in the bushes. Egret soon arrived and began to scratch. He
gobbled up one fat worm after another paying only attention to eating. Suddenly,
there was a loud clack followed by bright light. Egret floated in the air like a
balloon. When the birds looked again, there was a strange creature wobbling 30
out of the bushes. A voice in the clouds said 'just as you deserve.’ The other birds
could only look at each other.
Today egret, a lonely silent figure, can be seen in the field looking for food. He
walks on long slender legs and his neck is so long it curves in an S.
