LEARNING AREA MATHEMATICS 9
GRADING PERIOD SECOND QUARTER
TEACHER’S NAME LINALIE S. MCKENZIE
MODULE NO. MODULE 2.3 – 2.4
DATE OCTOBER 10 - 21, 2022

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
 Illustrate situations that involve joint variation
 Translate into variation statement a relationship between two quantities given by:
(a) a table of values; (b) a mathematical equation; (c) a graph, and vice versa
 Solve problems involving joint variation

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: At the end of this module, the learner shall be able to:
1. identify situations that involve joint variation
2. illustrate mathematical sentence/formula that shows joint variation
3. solve problems involving joint variation
4. understand the importance of mathematics in sustaining peace in the society

TOPIC: JOINT VARIATION

VALUE FOCUS: UNITY AND PEACE

“One thing that is special about Math is the unity, balance,

and oneness in its language of symbols and equations.”
- unknown

What’s Math Got to Do With

Peace?

One application of math in the society is to sustain peace by

its contribution to social science and policy making. One of the
things scholars do is to make mathematical models and write
down equations using standard symbols (+, -, x, +, = , etc.)
that represent all the interactions of variables (let’s say the
total population in the society and poverty). In the end,
leaders make judgements on what values do all these
different factors achieve due to the influence of the other
factors. In other words, policies are made based on how all
these factors/variables interact as a system to sustain peace.

The language of math

Math Trivia: In mathematics, unity is simply a synonym for the number "one" (1), the integer
between the integers zero (0) and two (2).

The number one (1) represents a single entity and it is our unit of counting. It is the first non-zero
number of the natural/counting numbers used for counting and ordering. The universal usage of the
number 1 is known all over the world. This shows that mathematics has its own language using he
medium of numbers and symbols. Thus, we can communicate in Mathematics, and through Mathematics.

LESSON 3: JOINT VARIATION

Let’s Review! (S)

(Learners shall try to answer this part in advance and shall be discussed with the teacher during synchronous session )
Identify the relationship being described in the given statements. Write DV for direct variation, (IV) for inverse
variation, and N if the relationship is neither direct nor inverse. Write your answer before the number.
______1.) The number of hours to finish a job to the number of men working

______2.) The amount of water to the space that water did not occupy in a particular container

______3.) The number of persons sharing a pie to the number of slices of the pie

______4.) The area of the wall to the amount of paint used to cover it

______5.) The time a teacher spends checking papers to the number of students

______6.) The age of a used car to its resale value

______7.) The amount of money raised in a concert to the number of tickets sold

______8.) The distance a vehicle travels with the time it consumes

______9.) The number of workers to the time it’ll take to finish a job

Apply the concept of direct variation in translating each statement into mathematical sentence. Use k as the
constant of variation. Write your answer on the space provided before the number. The first one is given as an
example.

Joint Variation
If the value of y varies jointly with the value of x and z, then Y = 𝒌𝒙𝒛

The constant k is called the constant of variation.

EXAMPLE 1. Suppose y varies jointly as x and z, and y=32 when x=8 and z=2,
find y when x=15 and z=6
Solution.

EXAMPLE 2. If f varies jointly as g and h. And f = 86.4 when g = 9 and h = 12.

Find g when f = 20 and h = 6.5
Solution.

EXAMPLE 3. Suppose L varies jointly as m and the square of n, and L=32.6 when m=4.5 and n=2,
find m when L=1.5 and n = 6. 1
Solution.

APPLICATION 1. The area (A) of a rectangle varies jointly as its length (l) and width(w). If the
area of the rectangle is 60 ft² when the length is 15 ft and width is 4ft,
what is the area if the length is 22ft and width is 9 ft?
Solution.

APPLICATION 2. In Physics, the force (f) is directly proportional to the mass (m) and
acceleration (a) of the object. Given that the force is 130 Newtons when the mass is 80kg with
acceleration of 45m/s², find the mass of the object when the force exerted is 75 Newtons with
acceleration of 30 m/s²?
Solution.

PRACTICE YOURSELF (Answer this during the asynchronous time to practice and for a chance to get a star next meeting)

Enrichment 1. The volume (V) of a can varies jointly as the height (h) of the can and the square of its radius(r).
A can with an 8 inch height and 4 inch radius has a volume of 402.12 in³. What is the volume of a
can that has a 2 inch radius and a 10 inch height? Answer: _________

Enrichment 2. The volume of a solid (V) with a circular base varies jointly with the height (h) and the square of
the radius(r). When the volume is 83.78 cm³, the height is 5 cm and the base radius is 4 cm. Find
the height of the solid, if its volume is 112 cm³ with radius of 3cm. Answer: ________

Accomplish worksheet – Mini Task 2.3

“Mathematics teaches us to try and never give up until we get the

right solution to the problem.
It is then here where you can find inner peace and sense of
accomplishment.”
