Agas-Agas Bridge

The mountainous Agas-Agas section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Southern Leyte

is prone to landslides during heavy rains, much more when a typhoon strikes the
province.
Engineering studies by foreign and local experts had sought countermeasures against
the landslides and the loss of life and property. Then, in 2006, one study proposed a
lasting solution: to construct a 350-meter-long bridge over a deep ravine, one that would
straddle two mountains and bypass the winding Agas-Agas section of the national
highway.
The bridge construction started in November 17, 2006 and was completed on August 2,
2009.
The Agas-Agas Bridge is a prestressed concrete beam bridge on the Pan-Philippine
Highway. The ₱1.024-billion bridge was funded partially by the Japan International
Cooperation Agency. The Japanese company Sumitomo Construction LTD is the main
player in putting this project together. With a length of about 350 meters (1,150 ft) and a
height of 87.5 meters (292 ft) above ground, the center span of the structure measures
177 meters (581 ft) in length supported by two piers measuring 73 meters (240 ft) and
75 meters (246 ft) from the ground.

Bridge Specifics: Located at Sogod, Southern Leyte. It is the tallest bridge in the
Philippines with a depth of 89 meters from the bottom of footings to the top roadway.

Project Type

Structure: Haunched girder bridge

Function / usage: Road bridge

Material: Prestressed concrete bridge

Construction method: Balanced cantilever method

The mountainous Agas-Agas section of the Pan-Philippine Highway in Southern Leyte

is prone to landslides during heavy rains, much more when a typhoon strikes the
province. It is a two-lane single carriageway. On August 9, 2009, the president signed
the construction of the bungee jumping platform along the bridge as well as other
tourism amenities.
Bridge Construction Method Used: Pre-stressed concrete beam bridge on the Pan-
Philippine Highway (aka Maharlika Highway). The piers are resting on bored piles cast
in placed. The superstructures were constructed in segments simultaneously at both
sides to maintain an equilibrium. The concrete members are prestressed( post
tensioned). The segmental construction may have utilized travelling forms. The
segments were repeated until it reached at the midspan. The other end rested on the
abutment.
