Review: I like the style of class very much. In one class, I listen to the professor explain the
content of the article, and in the other class, we discuss the content of this class together.
Sometimes I think it's more fun to talk with people. Because I can get more information from it.
Last time we talked about the development of China. I also have a clearer picture of China's
development history. I also understand better how my country has come to its present prosperity
step by step. At the same time, I also gain a new perspective in class. In the past, I always thought
the country was strictly controlled because it was afraid of falling apart. But I also know that it
contradicts economic development. But Professor Yi's answer gave me a new perspective. If the
economy develops, more people will want to stay in China. If we return the initiative to the
people, this choice may be even firmer.
In the lunch, I comunicated with one of our classmates who from Japen. I know Japenese
culture better. That’s so cool!

Article 1 The Rise of China and the Future of the West.G. John Ikenberry. 2008.

This article was written in 2008. The argument is that integrating China into the international
order is better for democracies than challenging it. So I went out of my way to look up the current
international order. One of the videos impressed me. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman
said China is a staunch defender of the international order, but I don't understand. Shouldn't China
choose to challenge the national order? It would that be better for China. The current international
order is dominated by the United States, so it is good for the American economy. Why wouldn't
China want independent dominance?

Article 2  China’s Threat to Global Democracy. Journal of Democracy.Michael Beckley & Hal
Brands. 2022

This article is about the influence of China's rise on democratic countries and how democratic
countries resist China. The article argues that the core issue of the war between China and the
United States is actually ideological. Or the contest between the socialist system and the capitalist
system. With the growth of Russia and China, more and more countries around the world are
becoming autocracies. That's because it can get policy support from China.

In recent years, China has been actively developing cooperative relations with other Asian
countries. China is trying to get more countries to join the authoritarian system. Only if there are
more authoritarian states can they compete better with democracies. Because countries with the
same system trust each other more. A search of ideological data reveals that not only do young
people in China tend to be more liberal and democratic, but young people in the United States tend
to be more authoritarian. In fact, this is part of the trade war between the two sides. Once one of
them spends more energy on stabilizing its internal spiritual construction, it will have less energy
for economic development.

Article 3. The fallout from Hong Kong: How to deal with China.

This article is about Hong Kong's development after China's intervention in its democratic system
and how to counter it. It is noteworthy that Hong Kong's economy has risen rather than fallen after
China's intervention. There was no foreign investment at all. Instead, more businessmen from the
mainland increased their investment, making Hong Kong's economy more prosperous. In this
case, sanctioning China is not a clear way to get China to abandon its authoritarian regime. On the
contrary, only cooperation can promote the development of both sides.

After reading these materials, my opinion is in favor of bilateral cooperation. Because at the
moment, either the US or China will suffer a lot when it strikes the other. Since we cannot achieve
the desired goal at present, it is better to cooperate with each other for mutual benefit. These
problems may be solved in the future when the economy improves for a while.
