Diffusion and Osmosis Worksheet:

Below are animal cells placed in beakers of various concentrations

For each beaker:

A. Draw an arrow to show which way the water would move by osmosis.
B. If the solute is able, draw an arrow to show which way it would move by diffusion.
C. Draw and label what would happen to the cell as a result of diffusion/osmosis (shrivel, swell).
D. Name the type of solution (hypertonic, isotonic, hypotonic).

For cells 1-9, the particle size of the solute is able to diffuse through the semi-permeable membrane.

1. 2. 3.

4. 5. 6.

7. 8. 9.
For cells 10-18, the particle size of the solute is not able to diffuse through the semi-permeable membrane.

10. 11. 12.

13. 14. 15.

16. 17. 18.

Post Questions:
1. When a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution will the flow of water be in or out of the cell?
2. When a cell is placed in a hypotonic solution will the flow of water be in or out of the cell?
3. Describe the differences and similarities in diffusion and osmosis.

4. What is the difference in simple and facilitated diffusion?

5. Why is facilitated diffusion necessary (hint: think about the pre-activity questions on this sheet)
