Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn

Often referred to simply as Rembrandt, Rembrandt
Harmenszoon van Rijn was a printmaker, painter, and
draughtsman during the Dutch Golden Age. He is
generally regarded as one of the greatest visual artists in
the history of art and the most significant figure in Dutch
art history. He was an inventive and prolific master in
three media. Rembrandt's works cover a wide range of
subject matter and style, including portraits and self-
portraits, landscapes, genre scenes, allegorical and
historical scenes, biblical and mythical themes, and animal
studies, in contrast to the majority of Dutch painters of the
17th century. His contributions to art were made at a time
of immense prosperity and cultural achievement known as
the Dutch Golden Age, when Dutch art, especially Dutch
painting, was prolific and innovative despite being in
opposition to the Baroque style that predominated Europe.
During this time, significant new genres emerged.
Rembrandt was a passionate art collector and dealer, just
like many other Dutch Golden Age artists like Jan
Vermeer.
