CONCEPTS ABOUT PRINT
ASSESSMENT
ALPHABETICS & PHONOLOGICAL
AWARENESS

Students learn that words are made up of

letters that represent the sounds of
speech. Then they learn to translate letters
in printed words into the sounds they make
to read and pronounce the words correctly.
PHONICS INSTRUCTION

The two approaches to phonics

instruction are the Analytic Approach
and the Synthetic Approach.

The Analytic Approach focuses on not

isolating consonant sounds, but
teaching words that begin with specific
consonant sounds.

The Synthetic Approach focuses on

decoding words sound by sound, and
isolating vowel and consonant sounds.
PHONICS ACTIVITIES

Play dough letters

Digraph wheels

Magazine/Newspaper scavenger
hunts

Letter swat

Phonics dice

Play dough smash for each sound

HIGH-FREQUENCY WORDS

High-frequency word practice

increases students’ fluency and helps
them become better readers.

It is important that students are able

to read and spell high-frequency
words.

SHARED & INTERACTIVE
READING PRACTICES

It is important that teachers provide

their students with ample
opportunities to practice reading.

Teachers help build reading fluency

when they model the process for their
students.

PLANNING FOR PRESCHOOL
STUDENTS

When children are provided literacy

experiences in pre-school, the
foundation is set for them to become
good readers and writers.

Pre-school children should be given

opportunities to hear books read
aloud, rich conversations, and
drawing and pretend play
experiences.

FORMAL & INFORMAL
ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES
Assessments are important because
they track students’ progress or lack of
progress.

Progress monitoring helps the teacher

to see a students’ specific strengths and
weaknesses, and to plan interventions
and activities tailored for that student.

Assessments are also great data for SAT

and IEP meetings to help the student
receive further assistance.

INFORMAL ASSESSMENT
TECHNIQUES

Assess letter knowledge with alphabet

cards

Assess print familiarity by providing a

student with a book and asking them to
