1 Before You Start
Read this chapter carefully before upgrading the software. Specifically,

focus on the following:
 Verify that this Upgrade Guide is applicable to the source version.
 Verify the upgrade scenario based on the network condition and the
device management environment.
 Verify the mode of a software upgrade according to the device type,
target software version, and requirements for the software upgrade.
 Check the ONT and OLT versions. For details, see chapter "2 Preparation
for the Upgrade."

 Versions earlier than iManager U2000 V200R014C60 do not support smart ONTs,
such as HS8245W. To manage smart ONTs through the NMS, you must upgrade
the NMS to iManager U2000 V200R014C60 or later.

1.3 Precautions
 The upgrade by using the CLI of the OLT or NMS will fail if the connected
optical link is interrupted when data is being issued. After the fault is
rectified, wait at least 2 minutes before performing the upgrade again.
 The ONT in the loading state cannot be deleted by OLT, NMS or NetOpen
software.
 If the ONT is powered off during the upgrade, the upgrade can still be
performed after the ONT resets. This will not cause any damage to the
ONT system.
The ONT is designed with active and standby systems. Power outage during the
upgrade causes damage only to the standby system. Therefore, the ONT still
functions normally after it resets.
 The version of the OLT used for the ONT upgrade must support the ONT
version. Otherwise, related boards on the OLT may be reset, or the ONT
may fail to be upgraded or may be faulty.
 ONTs V100 and V200 in the live network cannot be upgraded to
V300R018C00.
 The ONT V300R018C00 uses a new encryption algorithm that affects
version downgrade:
− If the source version is V300R018C00, the version cannot be
downgraded to a version earlier than V300R016C00SPC007.
− If a version is upgraded from a version earlier than V300R016C00 to
V300R018C00, and the web page, CLI, or FTP password is changed
after the upgrade, the new version cannot be downgraded to a
version earlier than V300R016C00SPC007. If the web page, CLI, or
FTP password is not changed, the new version can still be
downgraded.
− Rxxx in target VxxxRxxxCxxSPCxxx cannot be earlier than the
original R version. Otherwise, the ONT may fail to be upgraded or
may be faulty.
 This Upgrade Guide describes how to use the ONT upgrade tool
package.
− The ONT upgrade tool package is an incremental software package
developed based on officially released software. It integrates
customers' customization requirements and is released in specific
areas.
− The ONT upgrade tool package is named in the format of ONT
V100R001C00SPCxxx. It is a compressed file and needs to be
decompressed first.
− The ONT upgrade tool package consists of the warehouse upgrade
tool package and live-network upgrade tool package. The
warehouse upgrade tool package can only be used to upgrade ONTs
in customer warehouses. It cannot be used to upgrade ONTs on the
live network. Otherwise, the configurations of ONTs on the live
network will be lost and services will be interrupted. The
live-network upgrade tool package can be used to upgrade ONTs in
warehouses or directly upgrade ONTs on the live network. Before an

upgrade tool package is used, its type must be distinguished. For

details, see the Release Notes of the upgrade tool package.
1.4 Impact of the Upgrade

Impact on the System During the Upgrade
Impact on Services
All services on an ONT will be interrupted when the system restarts after the
ONT is upgraded. The service interruption lasts about 2 minutes.
Impact on Network Communication
Communication between the ONT and the OLT will be interrupted when the
system restarts after the ONT is upgraded. The communication interruption
lasts about 2 minutes.

Remote Upgrade by Using the NMS

In this upgrade mode, the operator uploads the ONT upgrade package file to
the NMS. Then, in the NMS GUI, the operator upgrades the target ONTs
which are connected to the OLT and are managed by the NMS concurrently.
The operator can also specify an automatic upgrade policy for the ONTs.
Multiple ONTs can be remotely upgraded by using the NMS simultaneously.
The OLT V800R006C02 supports the batch upgrades of ONTs which are
connected to the same PON port. Other OLT versions support the batch
upgrades of ONTs which are connected to different PON ports.
Upgrade by Using the OLT

In this upgrade mode, the operator uploads the ONT upgrade package file to
the OLT, and runs commands on the CLI of the OLT to concurrently upgrade
the selected ONTs which are connected to this OLT. This mode enables
multiple ONTs to be upgraded simultaneously. However, this mode applies
only to the ONTs which are connected to the same PON port of the OLT.
Local Manual Upgrade

This mode enables an ONT to be upgraded locally on the web page.
In this upgrade mode, the operator logs in to the ONT web page through the
Ethernet port, and loads the BIN file to upgrade the ONT. After the upgrade,
the operator restarts the ONT to make the upgrade to take effect. In this
mode, the operator can upgrade only one ONT at a time.
Remote Upgrade by Using the NetOpen

In this mode, the operator uploads the to-be-upgraded ONT or AP versions
to the NetOpen, and then upgrade the ONTs or APs managed by the
NetOpen through GUI.

2 Preparation for the Upgrade
About This Chapter

The software package of the gateway ONT V300R018C00 exceeds 16 MB.
Some ONTs or OLTs, however, require that the size of the loaded files cannot
exceed 16 MB; otherwise, the ONTs cannot be upgraded using the OLT or
U2000. Therefore, check the ONT version and make preparations before the
upgrade accordingly. The software package of the non-gateway ONT
V300R018C00 is smaller than 16 MB. In this case, no upgrade preparations
are required and this chapter can be skipped.
To upgrade a gateway ONT V300R012C00 by using the OLT or U2000, you

must first upgrade the ONT to V300R013C10SPC118 or later (the file size
must be smaller than 16 MB).
2.1 Preferred Upgrade Solution

When the relationship between the OLT version and the service board is
"Supported" as listed in Table 2-1, you can perform an upgrade using the
U2000 or OLT. For details on the upgrade procedure, see "Remote Upgrade
by Using the U2000" or "Upgrade by Using the OLT."

2.2 Alternative Upgrade Solution

When the following 2 conditions are met, the upgrade cannot be performed
by using the OLT but can be performed by using the U2000 (for upgrade
procedure details, see "Remote Upgrade by Using the U2000"):
 The relationship between the OLT version and the service board is
"Unsupported" as listed in Table 2-1 and Table 2-2.
 The U2000 version is V100R006C02CP3261, V100R009C00SPC302, or
V200R015C50SPC200 or later.

2.3 Standalone U2000 Upgrade Tool

When the following 2 conditions are met, the upgrade cannot be performed
by using an OLT but can be performed by using the U2000 or the standalone
U2000 upgrade tool (for upgrade procedure details, see "Remote Upgrade
by Using the U2000" and the Guide to Using the U2000 Upgrade Tool):
 The relationship between the OLT version and the service board is
"Unsupported" as listed in Table 2-1 and Table 2-2.
 The U2000 version is earlier than V100R006C02CP3261,
V100R009C00SPC302, or V200R014C50SPC200.

The following screenshots are for reference only and they may vary with the
version, but the upgrade operations are not affected.
APs do not support the remote upgrade by using the U2000.
3.1 Upgrading an ONT by Using the U2000

If the FTP server provided by the U2000 is used, obtain the IP address of the
FTP server, user name, and password for logging in to the server.

 If the full name of an ONT version is V300R018C00SPCxxx, the ONT software

version is displayed in the format of VxR0xxCxxSxxx on the web page, OLT CLI, or
U2000. For example, when the full name of an ONT version is
V300R018C00SPCxxx, V3R018C00Sxxx is displayed on the web page, OLT CLI, or
U2000.
 If the U2000 version is earlier than V100R006C02CP3261, V100R009C00SPC302,
or V200R014C50SPC200, split the ONT software package by using the ONT
package splitting tool, and then upload both the original software package (for
example, ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all.bin) and all the split software
packages (for example, ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all_part1.bin and
ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all_part2.bin) to the same directory on the
FTP server.

 In this section, iManager U2000 V200R015C60 is used as an example.
Procedure
Upload the ONT upgrade package file to the FTP server built in the U2000 by
using an FTP tool.
Step 1 Query the server address provided by the U2000. On the U2000 login
window, the default server IP address is displayed. Record this IP address
and use it as the destination IP address for file uploading.
Step 2 Use the FTP tool to upload the file of the target version on the PC to the
U2000 server. The following uses the third-party tool FileZilla.exe as an
example. Other FTP tools can also be used.
1. Connect the server.
In the dialog box that is displayed, fill in the basic information about the
server to be connected. Specifically, fill in Host with the IP address
obtained in step 1, Username with ftpuser, Password with

Changeme_123 (default password), and Port with 22 (default port).

Then, click Quickconnect. After the connection succeeds, go to the
next step.
2. Upload the file.

Select the path where the file of the target version is stored on the PC
from Local site, and select the path where the file to be stored on the
server from Remote site.
Right-click the file of the target version, choose Upload to upload the
file to the path specified on the FTP server. If a version file is displayed in
the lower pane of the Remote site window, the file is successfully
uploaded.

3.2 Manually Upgrading an ONT

Procedure
Step 1 Log in to the U2000.
Step 2 Enter the ONT window.

1. Choose View > Main Topology from the main menu.
2. On the Physical Root navigation tree of the Main Topology window,
double-click the OLT that connects to the ONT to be upgraded.
Alternatively, select the OLT, right-click, and choose NE Explorer from
the shortcut menu.
3. Select the board and port that connects to the ONT to be upgraded.

4. Double-click the port to enter the PON port window.
5. Double-click the PON port that connects to the ONT to be upgraded. The
ONT window is displayed. Select the ONT to be upgraded, right-click,
and choose Upgrade Terminal from the shortcut menu.

Step 3 Select the ONT upgrade package file.
In the preceding figure, V3R018C00Sxxx is used as an example for Target Version

and File Path. Ensure that Target Version is in the format of VxR0xxCxxSxxx.
In the Upgrade Terminal Software dialog box, enter the following

information:
1. File Path: Select ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all.bin.
2. Target Version: Click Auto-Obtain.
3. Switch to ONT Load Task: Select this item when needing an
immediate switch to the ONT loading task window after the
configuration.
4. Restart terminal after upgrade: Select this item when needing an
automatic ONT restart after the upgrade.
 When Graceful is selected for Reset Type, 3 scenarios are involved
regarding the automatic ONT start. However, in some cases, Graceful
is not displayed. For example, it is not displayed when a third-party ONT
does not support a graceful restart.
− If the ONT does not have any ongoing voice service or XML loading
task, the ONT will immediately restart after the upgrade.
− If the ONT has an ongoing voice service or XML loading task and the
service or task duration is within 4 hours (the maximum delay
before the restart), the ONT will restart when the service or task is
complete.
− If an ongoing voice service or XML loading task lasts for longer than
4 hours, the ONT will restart after 4 hours.
 When Forced is selected for Reset Type, the ONT will immediately
restart after the upgrade, regardless of whether the ONT has any
ongoing voice service or XML loading task.

or V200R014C50SPC200 and a gateway ONT is used, in the Upgrade Terminal
Software dialog box that is displayed, selectsplit files such as
ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all_part1.bin for File Path, but do not
select ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all.bin. Then, select Split
Package for Loading.

2. Target Version: Click Auto-Obtain.

3.4 Automatically Upgrading ONTs in Batches

Procedure

Step 2 Configure an automatic upgrade policy.
Different types of ONTs require different upgrade policies. For example, for the
automatic upgrade of the HG8245H, HG8240H, and HG8247H in the live network, 3
automatic upgrade policies need to be configured.
1. Choose Administration > Task Schedule > ONT Task List from the
main menu. The ONT Load Task window is displayed.
2. On the Auto Upgrade Policy tab, right-click, and choose Add
Upgrade Policy from the shortcut menu.
3. Configure an automatic upgrade policy.

In the Add Auto Upgrade Policy dialog box, enter the following
information:
− Policy Name: Enter a random name, for example, AutoUpGrade.
− Vendor: Select HWTC.
− Terminal Type: For example, select HG8245A.
− ONT Source Version: V3 indicates fuzzy matching of version
V3R0XXCXX.

If both V300R012 and V300R013 are used in the live network and the ONT Source
Version is set to V300R012, only V3R012 will be upgraded.
− Server Name: Select default server from the drop-down list.
− File Path: Select ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all.bin.
− Target Version: Select V3R018C00Sxxx (the version must be in
the format of VxR0xxCxxSxxx).
− Reboot Mode: Select a reboot mode as required for the target
version.
− When Graceful is selected for Reboot Type, 3 scenarios are
involved regarding the automatic ONT start. However, in some
cases, Graceful is not displayed. For example, it is not displayed
when a third-party ONT does not support a graceful restart.
 If the ONT does not have any ongoing voice service or XML
loading task, the ONT will immediately restart after the
upgrade.
 If the ONT has an ongoing voice service or XML loading task and
the service or task duration is within 4 hours (the maximum
delay before the restart), the ONT will restart when the service
or task is complete.
 If an ongoing voice service or XML loading task lasts for longer
than 4 hours, the ONT will restart after 4 hours.
− When Forced is selected for Reboot Type, the ONT will
immediately restart after the upgrade, regardless of whether the
ONT has any ongoing voice service or XML loading task.
For an upgrade where ONT V300R013C10SPC118 or later serves as an intermediate

version, you need to specify the ONT source version range.
− After specifying the version range, click Next. Specify ONT

V300R013C10SPC118 or later as the intermediate version. Other

4. In the ONT Range dialogue box, click User-defined. The Select

Device dialogue box is displayed. In this dialogue box, configure the
advanced parameters of the automatic upgrade policy.
In the Select Device dialogue box, select the NE to be checked and
click OK. Then, the ONTs connected to the selected NE will perform
automatic upgrades based on the policy.

5. Click OK after the configuration is complete.

Step 3 An automatic upgrade does not always start immediately after an automatic
upgrade policy is configured. Two conditions are involved:
1. For the offline ONTs that meet the automatic upgrade policy, the
upgrade starts immediately after the policy is configured.
2. For the online ONTs that meet the automatic upgrade policy, the
upgrade starts approximately 30 minutes after the policy is configured.
After the automatic upgrade policy is issued, the U2000 goes through a polling
process. If the ONTs are always online, the polling duration determines the time
when the ONTs start to upgrade. The polling duration can be configured on the server,
but such an operation is not recommended.

3.5 Upgrading ONT(s) by Using a Scheduled Upgrade Policy

Terminal from the shortcut menu.

scheduled upgrade.

information.

− File Path: Select ONTV300R018C00SPCxxx_common_all.bin.

− Target Version: Click Auto-Obtain.
− Scheduled Upgrade Time Segment: Select this item and enter
the time segment. The time segment for a scheduled upgrade must
cover a certain time span, for example, 11:00–12:00, which lasts for
an hour. If the time segment covers a short time span, for example,
11:00–11:01, the scheduled upgrade policy fails to take effect.
2. Click OK after the configuration is complete.
Step 4 Use the U2000 to query scheduled upgrade tasks every 10 minutes. If there
is a scheduled upgrade task, the U2000 also checks whether the upgrade
time arrives. If the time arrives, the U2000 starts the ONT upgrade. The
upgrade is complete after the ONT restarts.

4 System Rollback
If the upgrade fails, system rollback is required. To roll back the system to
the source version, load the upgrade package file of the source version.
The system rollback procedure is the same as the upgrade procedure. For
details, see chapter "3 Remote Upgrade by Using the U2000."

How to handle an upgrade failure?

When the upgrade fails, do not reset the ONT. Instead, upgrade the ONT
again according to the following the upgrade procedure and ensure that the
upgrade package file is correct. If the problem persists, use a new upgrade
package file to upgrade the ONT.
FAQ
1. Is the mini system still configured for the ONT?
No. The ONTs of V300R013 and later versions use the active/standby
systems. During an upgrade, the standby system is upgraded to the
target version. After the upgrade, the ONT starts from the standby
system.
2. Is data synchronized between active/standby systems?
Yes. The version information of the active system is synchronized to the
standby system 30 minutes after the ONT is upgraded. This ensures
that the active and standby systems have consistent version
information.
3. How to obtain the ONT package splitting tool?
Visit http://support.huawei.com, and choose Tools > Mini-tool >
Software > Access Network Product Line > Optical Access
TOOLS > ONT to obtain the ONT package splitting tool.
4. What are the key points during an upgrade?
a. During an upgrade by using the U2000, the completion percentages
on the U2000 are explained as follows.

its new version to the OLT. The OLT transparently transmits the
version to the U2000. After the U2000 receives the version, it
compares the received version with the target version in the
upgrade task. If the versions are consistent, the upgrade is
successful. If they are inconsistent, the upgrade fails.
