QUESTION 5 [10]
As of 2017, McDonald’s was one of the world’s largest restaurant chains. The company had
its roots in a small fast-food joint started by two brothers named Richard James McDonald
and Maurice James McDonald in San Bernardino, California in 1940. A businessman Ray
Croc was associated with the rapid growth of the fast-food retail chain in the US and globally
in the subsequent years. It took 33 years for McDonald’s to open its first 10,000 restaurants.
While it touched the 20,000-restaurant mark in mid-1996, the total surpassed 23,000 by the
end of 1997.
McDonald’s Corporation had installed several Information Systems for the operational
convenience of its employees and to help them in their decision making. It had implemented
these information systems to store and leverage customer information, provide quick service
to the customers, impart training to its employees, etc. These systems were used to make it
more convenient for customers to buy food through electronic payments. Also, an effective
customer relationship management strategy was implemented to retain customers.
McDonald’s used Information Systems to increase efficiency and deliver quality food to its
customers with advanced technology so that the food would be fresher, tastier, and hotter
each time they delivered it. The Information System was also leveraged to decrease the
effort, cost, and time involved in the procedures.
1.2 Critically discuss the advantages and major benefits of a computer-based information
systems to an organization. (20)

can use for the operational convenience of its employees and to help them in their
decision making. (15)
2.3 Critically discuss the advantages and disadvantage of using a solid state hard drive
(SSD) (10)
3.2 Critically discuss the application and benefits of electronic databases and other software
such as spreadsheets to the organisation. (10)
QUESTION 1 [30]
1.1. “Successful organisations all have at least one thing in common: employee
productivity. In fact, a Harvard study confirms that the best companies are 40% more
productive than the rest. This is why tracking and improving team productivity
remains one of the top challenges facing managers today.
Unfortunately, it has become even more challenging due to our continuously evolving
workplace. These changes have been driven by technology, globalisation and the
pandemic.
Tracking productivity gets even trickier for managers looking after a team with
different work setups, work habits and timezones.
So, the question remains. How can managers effectively track and increase team
productivity in this day and age?”
Discuss the characteristics that the managers in this scenario could apply in
developing high performing teams. (15)
1.2. One of the biggest challenges of our time is employee engagement. Research
shows that engaged employees are more productive, more creative and less likely to
leave. Therefore it’s not surprising that 88% of businesses are seeking to improve
employee engagement.
QUESTION 2 [20]
“Organisations all over the world are under increasing pressure to adapt to a rapidly
changing environment – one in which technology is the new currency and innovation is a
major driver of business success. Some would like to believe that the promised upheavals
associated with massive technological change are still some way off. However, the future is
already here. Encroaching automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT)
and other innovations are changing the business landscape, both in South Africa and in the
markets with which it does business. There is no time to wait to become technologically
savvy, using innovation to craft new competitive advantages. Waiting will simply increase an
organisation’s chances of becoming irrelevant in the foreseeable future.
Explain the impact of the above excerpt on the flow of information within the business
environment. (20)
QUESTION 3 [35]
3.1. “Each of us has blinders. We can only see things from our own perspective. But when
we come together with a common cause or a shared vision, our view broadens and
we can see and recognize things that we never could’ve seen on our own. That’s why
the best companies are diverse: they have diverse thinking”
Discuss the challenges that managers encounter in working with diverse populations. (20)
3.2. “A typical transformation is led by a CEO figurehead. It often involves major structural
change (acquisitions, disposals, partnerships, and organizational redesign),
widespread deployment of new technologies, considerable effort, and cultural
change. These elements still play critical roles, but a more complex, sensitized
context requires leaders to be wiser in what they say and do — and doing more of the
same won’t cut it.”
QUESTION 4 [15]
QUESTION 2 [20]
Inventory is key to profitability. Inventory velocity turns assets into profits. The faster
inventory turns, the greater the profitability. Inventory is the key issue to supply chain
management success. Customers demand that their orders be shipped complete, accurate
and on-time. That means having the right inventory at the right place at the right time.
QUESTION 3 [30]
For supply chain executives the first step is to clearly understand how the enterprise
chooses to compete. This is important not only for the obvious reason of working together in
the same direction, but also because supply chain must enable the business strategy; it is
not merely an operational department.
3.1 With an aid of a diagram, discuss the basic movements of the logistics function. (10)
3.2 Discuss how performance ratios can be used to measure the process performance.(20)
QUESTION 4 [25]
Product development is the complete process of taking an idea from concept to delivery and
beyond. Whether you are delivering a brand new offering or enhancing an existing product,
the product development cycle begins long before anything gets built. It encompasses
everything from brainstorming the initial concept to strategically planning, building, and
releasing it to market and then measuring its success. With this regard,

4.2 Explain the importance of customers in a product or service development processes.
(16)

economy (10)
4.2 Explain the most important changes that JIT brings towards an effective and efficient
distribution system. (15)
QUESTION 1 [35]
1.1. “Ensuring diversity and inclusion in the workplace has become one of the biggest
challenges facing today’s modern organizations. Diversity in the workplace focuses
on respecting and appreciating all employees for their differences (e.g. ethnicity, age,
religion, education, gender, disability, etc.). Inclusion, on the other hand, focuses on
ensuring that all employees feel valued and supported as individuals, irrespective of
their physical or cultural differences.
But with the move to remote working, today’s managers must find new ways to be
inclusive in our ever changing workplace environment.”
Explain the strategies that could be adopted to achieve effective workforce diversity.
Consideration must be given to the above excerpt in answering the question.
(25)
1.2. “Think of your diversity efforts like a game of chess. You need to be strategic in every
step of the way to reach your end goal. Meticulously plan how to get key people on
your side and then use them to convince their followers”
QUESTION 2 [20]
Discuss the role and function of culture in guiding businesses through the turbulence of a
VUCA environment.
QUESTION 3 [30]
3.1. “As most problems in business life are multi-faceted, it makes a lot of sense to get as
many different aspects as possible from a strategic point-of-view. “
Discuss the above statement in exploring the intertwined contributors to decision making.
(15)
3.2. Provide a brief overview of the five(5) conflict management approaches that managers
need to be familiar with. (15)
QUESTION 4 [15]
QUESTION 1 [22]
Shorter production runs and multiple configurations of products do not work well in
traditional manufacturing settings. Shorter runs require less material on the line. Most
manufacturers still bring a full pallet to the line when needing only a third of the material on
the pallet. As multiple product models flow through the assembly line, more pallets with
parts for each model fill the work cell. These are necessary to accommodate quick
changeovers on the line.
The result is a high level of chaos. Aisles become more congested as traffic bringing (and
returning) material to the line increases. Workers must use more steps to access the correct
component for each model. The possibility of workers attaching the wrong material for the
product model increases. Finally, safety issues rise. The good news is it is possible to
reduce excess inventory and still meet production goals.
QUESTION 2 [20]
A cycle count can be referred to as an inventory auditing procedure, which falls under
inventory management, where a small subset of inventory, in a specific location, is counted
on a specified day.
2.1 Discuss the rules that are mostly used in the cycle counting process. (14)
2.2 Determine the techniques can be employed to ensure accurate records and correct
inventory management. (6)
QUESTION 3 [30]
If you were a newly appointed supply chain manager. Discuss how would you utilize the
following tools to detect and analyse quality problems in an organisation:
3.1 Flowcharts (15)
3.2 Cause-and-effect diagrams (15)
QUESTION 4 [28]
4.1 Briefly explain the significance of capacity for the success of a business. (10)
4.2 Discuss different aspects to be considered when critical capacity decisions are made by
the business. (18)
QUESTION 2 [33]
2.1 Discuss the role of fourth party logistics in addressing strategic failures. (15)
2.2 With the use of relevant diagram, discuss the main areas of service that could be
provided by the fourth-party logistics. (18)
QUESTION 3 [27]
In many industrial sectors, original-equipment manufacturers (OEMs) face a challenging and
uncertain future. In recent years, input prices have fallen and growth in emerging markets
has slowed, decreasing new-equipment sales in industries ranging from oil and gas to
agriculture to commercial aerospace. In response, CEOs at industrial OEMs are increasing
their focus on aftermarket services.
The appeal of this strategy is simple: services provide stable revenue and often higher
margins than sales of new equipment. In this regard,
3.1 Explain the role of lean mindset on enhancing logistics performance. (12)
3.2 With the aid of a diagram, discuss the dependency levels of hierarchical planning
highlighting fundamental actions on each horizon. (15)
QUESTION 4 [16]
Discuss in detail, the future trends in the logistics outsourcing process. (16)
