4 Validity of operating instructions

This operating instruction only apply with the “General Operating Instructions Valves Business Unit Power

This operating instructions only apply to the valve type 62.
Please check that type designation and nameplate of valves match before any measures are taken,
especially when ordering any accessories or spare parts!

5 Use and design

The steam supported cooling system is used by a temperature reducing of the steam with a high water /
steam ratio. Through the support steam the injection water is optimal sprayed and the steam / water mixing
in the steam pipe is optimal.

The following sectional drawing is an example of the steam supported cooling system.

6 Notes to the mounting

Installation of the steam supported cooling system in the steam pipeline is most convenient if the cooler
holding flange welded to the steam line by the customer has been positioned vertically above the steam
pipe.
However, all other possible positions are permissible without limiting the functions. It is important though that
the direction of steam pipe flow is observed. The cooler must always be fitted so that the flow of cooling
water is in the direction of the current of steam. Observe the flow arrow on the main flange of the cooler. The
cooler is attached to the holding flange of the pipeline using the hexagonal nuts and bolts supplied. In some
cases the cooler is delivered already fitted with a steam reducing valve. In such a case the direction of
installation has been observed by the manufacturer. Then ensure that all the protective packaging
(particularly for the jet head) is removed before the steam reducing valve is fitted into the pipeline.

After fitting the cooler to the steam pipeline, fit the valves for cooling water and steam to the corresponding
flanges on the cooler. To ensure that the correct connecting flanges are used, observe the direction of flow
(flow arrow).
• The cooling water pipe must be on the side from which the steam to be cooled emerges.
• The steam pipe must be on the side into which the steam to be cooled flows.

The temperature measuring point should, where possible, be positioned 20 m (at least 10 m) after the point
of injection.

7 Notes to scouring, rinsing out and trial operation

To eliminate scale, welding residues and other impurities from the pipeline system, pipes are normally
scoured and rinsed out before trial operation.
With regard to the steam supported cooling system observe the following:
• If the cooler is located in the scouring circuit, the customer/planner must examine whether the valve
materials will withstand scouring. For the cooler we provide a cross-section drawing with an itemised list
and the appropriate details of materials.
• For the scouring and rinsing out processes preferably use the same direction of flow as is planned for
the subsequent steam process. If not, there is an increased risk of the impurities to be washed out
entering the interior of the cooler.
• Acid residues and/or particles of dirt may enter the interior of the cooler or cause damage to the stuffing
box packing during the course of time.
To ensure full system availability proceed as follows:
1. Remove the cooler, inspect it and, if necessary, remove any foreign bodies.
2. Repair any damage and replace any damaged components with new components.
3. Replace the stuffing box packing if it has been subjected to acid. To minimise maintenance, use the
stuffing box packings we have specially tested.

8 Notes to putting in operation and maintenance

The cooling section is put into operation as follows:

• Open the steam valve, observing the temperature gauge
Normally the steam valve is an Open/Closed valve. This means that intermediate positions cannot be set
through the control but only via emergency manual operation or, in the case of pneumatic valves, also
via the air filter reducing station. Since the flow of steam only represents a fraction of the total flow of
steam, the steam valve can generally be fully opened without the thermal load on the downstream
pipework rising too high. If it is not, an intermediate position (approx. 20 ... 50%) must be set first.
• Open the cooling water control valve, observing the temperature gauge
Since the cooling water valve is always a control valve, it is possible to open it gradually (initially by
manual control). In this way, the required steam temperature can be achieved in steps.
• Automatic mode without main steam flow
If only very small flows of steam are required, the steam supported cooling system, set as described
above, can now be switched to and run in the automatic mode.
• Open main steam valve, observing the temperature gauge
Gradually opening the main steam valve increases steam temperature. Gradually correcting the cooling
water valve adjusts the temperature to the set level again.
• Automatic mode with main steam flow
When normal operating conditions have been achieved by gradually running up the system, the system
can be switched to automatic mode.

The steam supported cooling system is essentially maintenance-free. Only the stuffing box packing to seal
the cooling water pipe should be inspected for leaks after commissioning and every 3 months thereafter,
tightening up if necessary.
