DEGREE OF COMPARISON

A. Understanding Degree Of Comparison

Degree Of Comparison is used as a comparison word between objects. Can be
an adjective or adverb

The easiest way to find out sentence forms that use Degree Of Comparison is
with keywords: More, Less, The Most, and others. Of course we must know in
advance what setences are suitable to use the phrase in the form of a Degree Of
Comparison.

B. Types and Examples Of Degree Of Comparison

There are three types of Degree Of Comparison that we can use to express
comparisons in English, including positive degree, comparative Degree, and
superlative Degree
1. Positive Degree
Positive degree is a simple of Degree Of Comparison because there is no
comparison in it. This Positive degree only states something with the
same comparison, so we can use the phrase “As … As” to complate the
sentence.

Examples of sentences from positive degrees:

 I want to look as beautiful as my mother
(Saya ingin terlihat secantik ibuku)

 You should practice karate as often as you can

(Kamu harus berlatih karate sesering yang kamu bisa)

 Irfan looks as handsome as Hedrian

(Irfan terlihat seganteng Hedrian)

2. Comparative Degree
Comparative Degree are used to compare two things in one sentence.
Generally, when using a comparative degree it is necessary to add the
suffix -er or -ier. For example in the word Angry, then you can change
it to Angrier.
 Comprative degree as an adverb can also be added More words before
adjective such as More Angrily, More Happily, and so on.

Examples of sentences from Comprative Degree:

 Be careful, the road is more slippery than you think
(Hati-hati, jalan itu lebih licin dari yang kamu bayangkan
sebelumnya)

 Learning English is easier than Math

(Belajar Bahasa Inggris lebih mudah daripada Matematika)

3. Superlative Degree
Superlative Degree is used to compare three or more things in one
sentence. If in Indonesian we often use the word “Most”, then in this
superlative degree the phrase used is “Most” or change the suffix from
adjective to -est, like Happy to Happiest.

Examples of sentences from Superlative Degree:

 Ibad is the smarter student in my school
(Ibad adalah murid yang paling pintar di sekolahku)

 Among the three volleyball players, Awal is the most handsome

man!
(Di antara tiga pemain voli itu, Awal pria yang paling ganteng!)

A. Pengertian Degree Of Comparison

Degree Of Comparison digunakan sebagai kata pembanding antara objek. Bisa
berupa kata sifat atau adjective maupun kata keterangan atau adverb.

Cara paling mudah untuk mengetahui kalimat yang menggunakan Degree Of

Comparison yaitu dngan kata kunci: More, Less, The Most, dan lainnya.
Tentunya kita harus mengetahui terlebih dahulu kalimat apa yang cocok
menggunakan frasa tersebut dalam bentuk Degree Of Comparison

B. Jenis dan Contoh Degree Of Comparison

Terdapat tiga jenis Degree Of Comparison yang bis akita gunakan untuk
menyatakan perbandingan dalam Bahasa Inggris, diantarannya adalah Positive
Deggre, Comparative Degree, dan Superlative Degree.
1. Positive Degree
Positive Degree merupakan bentuk sederhana dari Degree Of
Comparison karena tidak terdapat perbandingan didalamnya.

Positive Degree ini hanya menyatakan suatu hal dengan perbandingan

yang sama, sehingga kita dapat meggunakan frasa “As … As” untuk
melengkapi kalimat tersebut

Contoh kalimat dari Positive Degree:

 I want to look as beautiful as my Mother
(Saya ingin terlihat secantik Ibuku)

2. Comparative Degree
Comparative Degree digunakan untuk membandingkan dua hal dalam
satu kalimat. Umumnya, saat menggunakan comparatine degree perlu
menambahkan akhiran -er atau -ier. Misalnya pada kata “Angry”, maka
dapat kamu ubah menjadi “Angrier”.
 Comparative Degree sebagai adverb juga bisa ditambahkan kata “More
Angrily”, “More Happily”, dan seterusnya.

Contoh kalimat dari Comparative Degree:

 Be careful, the road is more slippery than you think
(Hati-hati, jalan itu lebih licin dari yang kamu bayangkan
sebelumnya)

 Learing English is easier than Math

(Belajar Bahasa Inggris lebih mudah daripada Matematika)

3. Superlative Degree
Superlative degree digunakan untuk membandingkan tiga hal atau lebih
dalam satu kalimat. Jika dalam Bahasa Indonesia kita sering
menggunakan kata “paling”, maka di superlative degree ini frasa yang
digunakan adalah “Most” atau mengubah akhiran dari adjective menjadi
-est, seperti “Happy” menjadi “Happiest”.

Contoh kalimat dari Superlative Degree:

 Ibad is the smartest student in my school
(Ibad adalah murid yang paling pintar di sekolahku)

 Among the three volluball players, Awal is the most handsome

man!
(Di antara tiga pemain voli itu, Awal pria yang paling tampang!)
