GORDOM RAMSAY

Gordon James Ramsay (Johnstone, Scotland, November 8, 1966) is a

British chef, restaurant owner and television presenter. Throughout his
gastronomic career he has been awarded 17 Michelin stars, of which he
currently maintains seven.12

In addition to his culinary skills, Ramsay is known for hosting cooking TV

shows and reality shows in both the UK and the US. Among the best
known are Hell's Kitchen, The F Word, Kitchen Nightmares and the US
version of MasterChef.

childhood and youth

Ramsay was born in Johnstone, a town in Renfrew County in

Scotland. At the age of five his family moved to Stratford-upon-Avon
(England), where he spent his childhood. His father, Gordon, worked
various jobs throughout his life, while his mother, Helen Cosgrove, was a
nurse. His childhood was not easy due to family problems and at the age of
16 he became independent.

In his youth, his greatest passion was soccer and he was playing for
various clubs at the amateur level. In mid-1984, a Glasgow Rangers scout,
a team of which Ramsay is declared a follower, 5 called him to do some
selection tests. However, his dream of becoming a soccer player was cut
short by a knee injury. Although Ramsay claimed in his autobiography that
he had played some first-team friendly matches, 5 Rangers historians point
out that this never happened, because he was only on trial.

the beginning
After giving up football, Ramsay became interested in cooking and
began studying to become a cook. At the age of 19 he entered North
Oxfordshire Polytechnic, where he completed a hotel management
course. In the late 1980s he took his first job as an assistant chef at the
Roxburghe House Hotel.

Later, he moved to London to work under one of the most

prestigious chefs in the United Kingdom, Marco Pierre White, at Harveys
restaurant.

After almost three years, he left his position and wanted to move to
France to study cooking. French cuisine, but Pierre White convinced him to
work with Albert Roux at the restaurant Le Gavroche, located in the British
capital. A year later, Roux invited Ramsay to work with him as sous chef at
Hotel Diva, a ski resort in the French Alps. Ramsay then moved to Paris to
work at the restaurants of Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon, the chef who
more Michelin stars it has earned. For three years he continued to work on
classic French cuisine and gained the skills to run his own restaurant
business.

gastronomic field

Ramsay ran the main restaurant at Claridge's Hotel in London.

Upon his return to London in 1993, he received an offer to become

chef at La Tante Claire, a restaurant located in the Chelsea neighborhood.
However, Marco Pierre White reappeared in his life to hire him in another
business: he offered him the position of chef and a 10% stake in the
Rossmore business, one of his restaurants. The business was renamed
Aubergine and in 1994, a year after it opened, Ramsay got the first
Michelin star of his career.11 The Aubergine got two stars and Gordon
stayed there until 1997, when he left it after a dispute with the owners.
In 1998, Ramsay opened his first restaurant of his own, Restaurant
Gordon Ramsay—also known as Gordon Ramsay at Royal Hospital
Road—in Chelsea, on the former location of La Tante Claire. To establish
that business he had the financial help of his brother-in-law Chris
Hutcheson. Within three years he was recognized with three Michelin stars,
Ramsay being the first Scottish chef to do so. After that he expanded
rapidly by opening other locations, mostly in luxury hotels, and became an
entrepreneur as well as a restaurant owner. The first was Petrus, also in
London, who was joined by others in the rest of the country. His fame also
served to elevate other chefs such as Angela Hartnett or Marcus Wareing,
who began as his protégés and later developed a career on their own.

One of the most special restaurants for the chef was Amaryllis,
opened in 2001 in Glasgow. Although it achieved a Michelin star the
following year, it was considered too sophisticated for the Scottish city and
due to a lack of customers it ended up closing in 2004.

Ramsay did not open foreign businesses until 2005, with the
inauguration of Verre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and months later he
opened two more in Tokyo, Japan. In November 2006 he made the leap to
the United States with Gordon Ramsay at the London in New York, which
entered the Zagat Guide. In 2007 he established his first restaurant in
County Wicklow (Ireland) and in 2008 he expanded his presence to Los
Angeles and Paris (France), with a last location in the Trianon hotel in
Versailles.

Acknowledgments
In his entire career as a chef, Gordon Ramsay has earned a maximum
of 17 Michelin stars. He is the third chef in the world in number of stars,
only surpassed by Joël Robuchon, with 31, and Alain Ducasse, with 19. In
2006 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire.

Gordon's first restaurant, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, maintains

three Michelin stars and was ranked Best in London by Harden's for eight
years. In 2008 he lost that status in favor of Petrus, a restaurant run by one
of his former protégés, Marcus Wareing.

critics
Gordon Ramsay has been one of the most awarded chefs of the time,
he has generated numerous controversies due to his behavior, sometimes
very temperamental. He once expelled A.A. Gill, a food critic, from one of
his restaurants after he said in a review that Ramsay was "a terrific chef,
but a disappointment as a person." This behavior has been his hallmark in
his television shows, where he forged a characteristic personal style. In
spaces like Hell's Kitchen or Kitchen Nightmares, he does not hesitate to
yell at his participants and be a very intimidating person if they do
something wrong or it is not to his liking.

Ramsay's television appearances have been criticized on numerous

occasions by some colleagues, who accuse him of excessive prominence.
One of his discoverers, Marco Pierre White, went so far as to say of him
that “you cannot be a chef and appear on television all the time. When I
earned my Michelin stars he was always behind the stove.” His fame has
also drawn the attention of the British tabloid press, which has repeatedly
published news about his personal life. Ramsay has claimed that his
appearance in the media has hurt his business on more than one occasion.

The profanity used by Ramsay has also caused him a problem. In

Australia, where his Kitchen Nightmares show became very popular,
several parents' associations called for its removal because of the cook's
foul language. The controversy even reached the Australian Parliament,
where a change in the television regulation code was studied.

Personal life
Ramsay has been married since 1996 to Cayetana Elizabeth
Hutcheson, better known as Tana Ramsay, with whom he has had five
children; Megan, Holly, Jack, Matilda and Oscar. His wife is a teacher
specialized in the Montessori teaching method, and she has published
several books on cooking, advised by her husband. His brother-in-law
Chris Hutcheson was in charge of Gordon's restaurant empire until 2010.

On January 10, 2023, he announced on his social media that he is

expecting his sixth child.

His family currently resides in Battersea, a neighborhood located in

central London. One of his biggest hobbies is football and he is a Glasgow
Rangers fan, he also does triathlon.
