Question 775064-3-27R. A discus thrower at a track meet hurls a 2.0 kg discus.

She exerts a
horizontal force of 2 ⋅ 8 ×102 N on it as she spins. She rotates the disc, with her arm outstretched, in
uniform circular motion, with a radius of 1.00 m. How fast will the discus travel when released?

Solution:

Given, mass of discus is 2.0 kg. Force exerted by the discus thrower is 2 .8× 102 N .Thrower rotates
the disc, with her arm outstretched, in uniform circular motion, with a radius of 1.00 m.

From Newton’s second law, we know that forces cause accelerations.

The force applied by thrower will give the necessary centripetal force for disc to move in circular
motion. The moment when discus is released, the centripetal acceleration of the disc will be

2 ⋅ 8 ×10 2 N
ac=
2.0 kg
2 2
¿ 1⋅ 4 × 10 m ∕ s .
And speed of the discus can be calculated from,

v
a c=

v 2 2
⇒ =1 ⋅ 4 × 10 m ∕ s
r
⇒ v= 11 ⋅832m
