STUDENT ESSAY FORM (StEF)
Effective Date:

DATE SUBMITTED: 03/17/23

COURSE / SECTION: CWTS102
ACTIVITY TITLE: Case Analysis
CASE STORY TITLE: Volunteerism

Conflict Identification
Jaja, the story's main character, is a law student struggling to come to terms with her
parent's expectations of her and her values. While in law school, she becomes increasingly
frustrated by the flaws in the legal system and the numerous violent crimes that go unpunished.
These incidents leave Jaja feeling anxious and disheartened, and she seeks out positive outlets to
cope with the stress. Jaja begins volunteering, but she quickly realizes that many people hesitate to
do the same. Some are apprehensive because they believe they lack the necessary skills to assist
others, while others lack confidence in their abilities. Jaja also observes that some people are
ashamed to volunteer, fearing they might make mistakes or embarrass themselves.
Despite her many obstacles, Jaja is determined to do good and help others. Her journey
highlights the complex conflicts that arise when our values and actions don't align. We witness her
struggle to reconcile her desire for justice with the realities of a flawed system, and we see her
grapple with the challenges of finding purpose and meaning in a world that can be cruel and
unforgiving. Through Jaja's experiences, we gain a deeper understanding of the importance of
empathy, compassion, and resilience in the face of adversity.
Plan of Action
As Jaja did, one way to take action is to explore volunteer opportunities in your community.
Look for organizations or programs that align with your interests and values, and consider starting
with small tasks or projects to build your confidence. You may be surprised by how much joy and
satisfaction you can gain from helping others and your positive impact on their lives.
Little deeds of kindness can have a big impact. Start by offering to help a neighbor or
donating to a local charity. As you become more comfortable, you can take on more significant
projects and develop new skills. Volunteering is not just about helping others but also about
personal growth and fulfillment. So, take that first step and see where it takes you!
Reflection
Volunteering is a voluntary activity in that one can participate. It is not obligatory, but it can be a
way to acknowledge our understanding of the world and our desire to improve it. As individuals, we
possess the potential to lead and motivate others to do good, resulting in benefits for both the
recipients and ourselves. Whenever the chance arises, whether big or small, we should seize it
without hesitation. Assisting others may not always be easy, but it can nurture our souls
meaningfully.
