According to the statistics, it found out that over 100 000 students receive a bachelor’s degree in the
Humanities. And less than two out of three Humanities students get jobs in the private sector.
Students enrol for a degree in Humanities in South African universities due to its flexibility that the
faculty offers and this can have a positive implication in the future if the students. Furthermore, this
essay will unpack the reason why students enrol in the Humanities. It will then discuss the benefits
this can have for students.

The versatility of the Humanities encourages students to enrol. Humanities students have the ability
to be more creative and outstanding critical thinkers making a degree in Humanities fulfilling. The
Humanities is the third most popular area of specialization for students. Moreover the most popular
major’s students study in the Humanities faculty are English, a foreign language, art history and
philosophy. The Humanities faculty offers students a complete point of view on certain topics across
Humanities. It in result provides students with knowledge and social skills. Overall, students who
enrol for a degree in the Humanities have the ability to be more flexible. And that is why students
enrol for a degree in the Humanities.

The benefits of enrolling for a degree in the Humanities are marketable skills, job satisfaction, and
the ability to do more with their major and learn life skills. Humanities students develop oral and
written communication skills which is the ability needed at every workspace, especially the
marketplace. For example they will be able to communicate effectively and do well in problem-
solving. They are also usually satisfied with their jobs because they usually do not work for money
that way they become more productive and successful. These students receive plenty of
opportunities when they study for a more technical approach such as digital Humanities. Students
who enrol for a Humanities degree also get to learn more about various cultures and appreciate
cultural differences.

In conclusion, Humanities students will tend to be more flexible when getting a job and this can
definitely have positive implications to their future. Students who enrol for a Humanities degree are
more likely to live a more content life and have a more productive and successful life. They get to
high paying jobs especially jobs which are in high demand. These students gain useful knowledge,
skills and communication which will be more helpful to them if they get hired. “It is precisely
because science is so powerful that we need the Humanities now more than ever.”
