NFPA 90A Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Systems (HVAC)

NFPA 101 references the use of 90A "Standard for the Installation of Air-Conditioning and Ventilating Systems", 2002

Supplementary Materials Within the Air-Handler System

Do combustible materials have a flame-spread 25 or less per NFPA 255, ASTM E84 or UL 723? Do combustible materials have a smoke developed Index of 50 or less per NFPA 255, ASTM E84 or UL 723? Do tested components demonstrate no evidence of Continued Progressive Combustion per NFPA 255, ASTM E84 or UL 723?? Has the article been tested in form intended for use per NFPA 255, ASTM E84 or UL 723? Is there plastic foam ______, tar_______ or other coatings in the condensate pan______? Inside Air-Handler Unit Inspection Air-Handling Unit condensate pan inspections are often overlooked for non-compliant foam, tar and other coatings, as well as accumulations of biological hazards. See above code requirements.

Air Outlets
Are air outlets noncombustible or have a flame spread of 25 or less and smoke of 50 or less per NFPA 255, ASTM E84 or UL 723?

PLENUMS
Is the space being used for occupancy or storage? Are there abandon materials (wire, cable, etc.) or other materials in plenum?

Ceiling Cavity Plenum

Fire Stopping - Are all penetrations through rated walls, floors and / or ceilings properly firestopped? If not made from metal or glass, are light diffusers listed and marked "Fixture Light Diffusers for Air-Handling Fixtures"? Is the air temperature delivered to the plenum less than 121C (250F) Maximum? Are the plenum construction materials suitable for continuous temperature and humidity exposures? If the plenum (ceiling / floor) is part of a fire resistance rated assembly does it comply with rated assembly design? For fire-rated ceiling systems are there gypsum "tents" over recessed lighting, speakers, etc? Are ceiling materials (in rated floor/ceiling assemblies) consistent with original design? Are penetrations in fire rated ceiling / floor assemblies properly firestopped? Are materials exposed to airflow noncombustible or limited combustible with a maximum smoke developed index of 50? Are electrical wires, cables and optical fiber cables listed for plenum use? Is there pneumatic tubing in the plenum, if so does it meet the requirements of UL 1820 Is the nonferrous fire sprinkler piping listed and labeled for plenum use per UL 1887? Are Optical-fiber and communication raceways listed per UL 2043? Are loudspeakers listed and labeled per UL 2043? Are Recessed lighting fixtures listed per UL 2043? Do supplementary combustible materials meet maximum flame spread of 25 and smoke developed of 50 per NFPA 255? Smoke Detectors are exempt from combustibility requirements Have Abandoned Materials exposed to the air flow been removed? Recess Lighting Use Application Labeling If ceiling is insulated are lighting fixture housings IC-Rated and Listed?

Air-Handling Unit Room Plenums

Are duct coverings, linings, acoustical liners and miscellaneous materials in compliance with section 4.3.3? Is the room or space devoid of storage and any occupancy? Have Abandoned Materials been removed?

Raised Floor Plenum

Has the integrity of firestopping been maintained? Is the air temperature delivered to the plenum less than 121C (250F) Maximum? Are the plenum construction materials suitable for continuous temperature and humidity exposures? Are materials exposed to airflow noncombustible or limited combustible with a maximum smoke developed index of 50? Are Wires, Cables an Optical Fiber Cables non or limited combustible with a smoke density of 50 or less or NFPA 262 tested? Is there pneumatic tubing in the plenum, if so does it meet the requirements of UL 1820 Is nonferrous fire sprinkler piping listed per UL 1887? Are Optical-fiber and communication raceways listed per UL 2043? Are intermachine cables, wires, listed optical-fiber cables and raceways in computer rooms in compliance with NFPA 75? Are Loudspeakers and recess lighting fixtures listed per UL 2043? Smoke Detectors are exempt from combustibility requirements Are Supplementary Materials in compliance with above requirements per Section 4.3.3 Have Abandoned Materials exposed to the air flow been removed?
