Please consider the following general prompts when

approaching a text.

 Number paragraphs (consider dialogues as a paragraph) so we can easily identify

references.
 Annotate the text. (You might want to consider the document “How to annotate a
text”)
 Write a journal entries (before, while, after working with a text). Write ALL your
responses, impressions on the texts you work with. Don’t let any idea fly away! Write
EVERYTHING down, even when you think it’s a farfetched idea; our minds work in
mysterious ways.
Useful questions to always bear in mind:
 What type of text is it?
 Read the title. What does it suggest to you? Which predictions can/could you make in
relation to the content of the story?
 Who’s the author? What do you know about the author?
 Who’s the intended audience of the text?
 Whose is the voice in the text?
 Mind references to people, places, objects, trademarks, other texts, etc. and reflect:
how do these contribute to the meaning in the text?
 What’s the author’s point of view in relation to the topic?

Last but not least, identify evidence in the text that supports each of your answers.
