Insights/Narrative Report:

Helping people is the value that I want to add most, especially to the kids in our
community. The community service that I conduct is teaching mathematics to the
kids in our barangay maguirig. The pandemic has a greater impact on the learning
process or education of children. Now I have the opportunity to teach the
children in our barangay about math and to instill in them the idea that helping
others brings joy and happiness. On April 23, 2022, at 4:00 pm in the afternoon, I
went to our gymnasium, which is the venue of my conduct teaching, and I
gathered all the children that are within the scope of zone 6 of Maguirig. The
number of participants that I proposed was 5–10 participants, but unfortunately,
only 9 kids participated, but I am very happy because there are these kids actively
and willing to learn something from me. Before I started teaching the kids, I
prepared all the materials needed, such as the bondpaper, the whiteboard
marker, and some flashcards for the examples. And on the first day, I teach them
the basic operations because most of them are in 3rd and 4th grade, and most of
them, even if they are in the higher grades, still do not know how to add,
subtract, multiply, and divide. When I started to teach, I explained to them what
the basic operations were and how they were important in our education as we
progressed through or continued in higher grades. And after that, I give some
examples of the basic operations and explain how to solve the numbers provided
in the examples. And after that, I called somebody to solve the numbers that I put
on the paper, and luckily they understood and got my explanation and were able

to solve the given examples that I prepared that day. However, after the session,
they request that they teach them again. And I am very lucky with kids because
they find it interesting and still want to learn more about math, so I decided that
after my class I would teach them. Actually, this is my 3rd day teaching them
because I started on April 23 and continued until today, April 25, 2022, and the
kids enjoy it. I want to continue to teach them, and I want more kids to
participate in the sessions. So yesterday there were many kids who participated in
the activity because they informed other kids that I was teaching math, so they
wanted to learn math, so they attended my second session at the gymnasium. So,
in terms of their health, I'm still adhering to the social distancing and am on my
third day or third session of teaching math. And I decided to teach them how to
read Tagalog and English. I don't have any problems with their reading capacity in
Tagalog, but in English there are a lot of lapses and there are words that they are
not familiar with, so I also teach them a vocabulary of words that they do not
know. Overall, they are all excited when the session starts, especially when they
solve something. They say they learned something from me, and I am happy
about that. It is very comforting to know that you have at least helped them in
some way. I just want to say that the reason I chose mathematics to teach the
kids instead of reading is that some kids are afraid of solving mathematics
problems and some kids despise the word "math," so I just want to instill in the
kids that mathematics is a very interesting and enjoyable subject. So while they
are still kids, I want them to appreciate mathematics as a subject. As far as one of
the kids that I teach, she is in 6th grade and still does not know how to subtract.
Imagine how they would know if there were no one helping them. As far as my
session of teaching math going through, they are learning something, and it is my
pleasure to hear that feedback from the kids.
