The most recent results of the
Program for International Student
Assessment (PISA) conducted by the
Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD)
showed that 15-year-old students in
the Philippines scored lower in
reading, mathematics, and science
than those in most of the countries
and economies that participated in the
survey back in 2018. This dismal
situation in the education of students
is further aggravated during the onset
of the covid-19 pandemic. At its
height, 45 countries in Europe and
Central Asia closed their schools,
affecting 185 million students and
resulting in the further decline of the
Philippine educational system. Recent
surveys revealed that the Philippines
lags in literacy and numeracy skills
compared to its neighboring countries
which prompted Vice President and
DepEd secretary Sara Z. Duterte to
launch the Matatag: Bansang
Makabata, Batang Makabansa Project.

We are no strangers to the
different woes that confront our
educational system nowadays. Every
day we hear complaints about the lack
of school facilities such as tables and
chairs, computers, books, etc.
We also hear of complaints on
congestion not only due to lack of
classrooms but in the offered
curriculum as well.
The list seems endless that is
why we are so glad that our DepEd
Secretary Sarah Z. Duterte had finally
found a solution, if not for all these
problems, but at least for some.
One of the best components of
this Matatag project that caught our
fancy is the plan to reduce the number
of learning areas in all curricula and
strengthen literacy and numeracy
programs. The former and the latter
are both very important in ensuring
the survival of the people in this world
because, during the covid-19
pandemic, it has been found that
individuals who suffered the most,
economically, psychologically,
socially are those who do not have the
chance of accessing quality education.
The pandemic has taught us a lesson
to prioritize holistic education and
learning than just emphasizing skills
for employability.
Moreover, the achievement of
literacy and numeracy is also one of
the United Nations Educational
Scientific and Culture Organization’s
(UNESCO) main thrusts in
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)
(UN 2015, SDG TARGET 4.6). Hence,
the said project of DepEd Secretary
Sarah Z. Duterte is also in harmony
with that of the United Nations of
which the Philippines is a part.
Despite the good intentions of
this Matatag project, it was not spared
from receiving harsh comments from
critics. Educational Psychologist
Lizamarie Oligario lambasted the
Matatag project by saying that VP
Sarah has no concrete plans on how
she is going to address the country’s
educational system’s problems.

Yes, cheating is inexcusable and
indeed there is a need for the
teacher to call the attention of the
involved students. But the way the
teacher did it has gone awfully
wrong.

October 10, 2017. The project would
link to Bayug Island in Hinaplanon to
Barangay Santiago. The purpose of the
project is a detour from the main
highway to decongest the city’s traffic.
This project was implemented by the

Highways, the first phase of the road
started last February 20, 2018 with
project costs 73.7 million pesos and the
second phase started last March 19,
2018 with a project costs of 45.4

February 14, 2023 to support the
Department of Agriculture Program
in promoting Urban Gardening
amidst the covid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Roel Togonon, the school
GPT Coordinator solicited several
seeds variety from the Iligan City
Agriculture’s Office as well as from
other stakeholders like our former
principal, Dr. Rosemarie
Macarandan, and others. The said
activity will help Santiago urban
farmers save money from buying
seeds, and maintains a harmonious
relationship between the school and
the community by promoting
community involvement through
replicating and connecting school
agricultural projects and programs
to urban farmers.
Before distributing the seeds
to the community, Mr. Togonon
conducted an orientation first with
the chosen beneficiaries. He
oriented them on what was the
school’s and the stakeholder’s aim
in giving them the seeds for free
and that is to help them augment
their income most especially in this
time of pandemic where there is
scarcity of everything. He, then
demonstrated to them on how to
plant and care for those seeds in
order for it to grow healthy and be
ready for market.
In one of his talks during the
orientation, Mr. Togonon expressed
his profound gratitude to all the
stakeholders who donated some
seeds by saying, “I am quite
surprised with the number of
supporters we had for this seeds
distribution project. I thought I
would only be receiving seeds from
the City Agriculture Office but it
turned out that we got lost of
supporters here who are very much
willing to support you all the way
just to see you being set free from
the bound of poverty.”
The people of Barangay
Santiago were also very
enthusiastic upon receiving the
seeds. They immediately planted
the seeds and applied everything
they were taught during the
seminar with the hope that they
would be able to reap the fruits of
their labor soon. The school hopes
that this partnership will be
sustained in the years to come.

last November 28, 2023.
Our new school head was a former
assistant principal of Iligan City
National High School where he had
rendered service for 37 years. He was
transferred to Santiago National High
School as part of his promotion to
Assistant Principal II. At first, he was
hesitant in accepting the new post
because according to his peers, his
heart belongs to Iligan City National
High School. However, he could not say
no to the order of DepEd
Superintendent Roy Angelo A. Gazo and

Before the vaccination day, the
students were informed to have their
parent's consent. Out of 56 willing
students, only 15 were approved by
their parents to get the booster shots
and vaccines.

Salvador said in his acceptance speech.

Dr. Salvador continued his speech
by elaborating on his plans for the
school. At the top of his plan is the
strengthening of the academic
performance of the students, lessening
absenteeism and tardiness among the
students, and the observance of time
on task. He wants no time wasted so as
much as possible, teachers and
students should only concentrate on
their lessons. He also encouraged all
the students to maintain cleanliness
inside and outside the campus.

Ambalong, parents, students, and some
of his colleagues from Iligan City
National High School. Per the request of
Dr. Jose E. Salvador, we only had a
very short program so as not to disrupt
the classes. He only allowed the Senior
High Students to be present during the
program while the Junior High School
students went on with their respective
classes.
The installation program ended
exactly after 3 hours only as Dr.
Salvador instructed. A simple snack
was then served to the guests which
capped the day’s event. All the
teachers then proceeded back to their
classrooms to continue with their
classes.

practices a reward system through
convocation at the end of every
quarter to recognize and appreciate
the students’ performance.
The said convocation is
beneficial for both teachers and
students because it serves as an
avenue to celebrate the fruits of their
hard labor. Since the time of our
former principal Dr. Rosemarie S.
Macarandan, it has been a practice to
gather the parents and the honors
students in a few hours celebration to
recognize and rewards the latter’s
effort by awarding them with
certificates signifying their rank in the
class top ten students. Aside from the
distribution of certificates, the honors
students’ advisers also reward their
students with some goods or school
supplies.
Meanwhile, those parents who
show full support to their children by

needles. If he could invent one thing,
it would be a tool that would make it
easily and more fearless for
individuals to get immunizations. Ten

Hi my name is Althea Miller and I
live my life like a normal 18-year old
teenager. My parents are workaholic
because we don’t have enough money to
afford my schooling. When the enrolment
day has arrived, my parents enrolled me
at one of the best schools in the city. It’s
their ambition to send me to a school
where rich students were enrolled to
fulfill their dreams.
First day of school, I went to
school driving my parent’s car. While
looking for a parking a lot I bumped my
car to the expensive looking car. “Oh my
god!” I screamed. “I guess you need to
practice your driving skills” the guy
behind me commented. He’s cute but his
not helping me. “Y-You know whose car
is this?’ I asked nervously. “Who knows?
Can you afford paying the damages?” He
replied while he opened the car and gets
his bag inside the car. I blankly stare
realizing this cute guy owns the car. “I’m
so sorry, how can I pay you back?” I
apologized. “Let me think, I bet you can’t
afford paying?” He replied. “Meet me

I look around the school searching
for my class room. I roam for a while and

Table Tennis tournament

Jay Marie Palpita clinched a
medal in Cluster meet table tennis
2023 tournament after scoring 2-1
against Sidney from Hinaplanon.
Aside from Cluster meet tournament
she also reigned at the table tennis
tournament at the Amphi theatre,
Barangay Pala-o Iligan City.
She copped the division title
after beating Sidney from Hinaplanon
in three sets to one in their final
match. Sidney landed second place

claimed the AQ Prime Asean Chess
Championship as he defeated his
older compatriot and international
Rolando Nolte in 57-moves king’s
Indian defense on the final round of

night. Quezon finished the
tournament with 7.5 points on six

Calvin Oftana ruled the court

after winning the PBA Governor’s
cup. He was also named the Cignal
-Play PBA PC player of the week
after playing a big role to sustain
