Hanging is a simple yet effective exercise that can be used for

REHABILITATION shoulder rehabilitation and overall upper-body strength. It is a
bodyweight exercise that involves hanging from a bar or other
overhead structure and is suitable for individuals of all fitness
levels.
By Scott Gaines
As a review, the shoulder is a complex joint that is made up of
three bones: the clavicle (collarbone), the scapula (shoulder
blade), and the humerus (upper arm bone). It is the most mobile
joint in the body, allowing for a wide range of movements such
as reaching, lifting, and rotating. However, this mobility also
makes the shoulder susceptible to injury and instability.
Common injuries include shoulder impingement and rotator cuff
tears. Shoulder impingement occurs when you raise your arms
The supraspinatus tendon can get pinched between the
humerus and the acromion process of the scapula. That’s
where the pinching and/or pain comes from when you try to
raise an injured or compromised shoulder.

As described in the book Shoulder Pain? The Solution &

Prevention by Dr. John M. Kirsch, hanging stretchings the
brachial arteries and the coracoacromial ligaments. This
improves blood flow and can increase the subacromial space
where impingement occurs. In addition, Dr. Kirsch states that

This could be a pull-up bar, monkey bars, or even a tree

To hang:
1. Grip the bar with an overhand grip (palms facing away

FEMALE COMPETITIVE Women don’t have as much testosterone as

HOW TO AVOID It’s not unusual for clients to push and to train
according to the slogan “no pain, no gain.”
OVERTRAINING Indeed, this could be a worthy idea for a
competitive athlete but for our normal everyday
client, it tends to lead to overtraining.

Overtraining can be defined as an exercise

program that leads to “an undesired outcome of
fatigue and performance decrements.” We know
from the GAS that this is very real. Now we also
know it may have psychological or mental
consequences including:

Muscle pain or soreness

Weight loss
Gastrointestinal disturbance
Overuse injuries
Loss of self-confidence
Anxiety
Emotional/motivational changes

Client’s Goals: Make sure your client’s goals

One key is consistency in training. It’s not enough

to train two days a week at random. If the goal is
to gain muscle mass, clients must be consistent in
their frequency and duration of exercise as well
as their adherence to the program itself.

Sleep is Vital for Muscle Growth: Sleep is not

only necessary for clear cognitive function; the
body needs it for physical recovery. When the
body sleeps, the real work of repair and growth
occurs. During an intense lifting session,
“damage” is done to the lean tissue in the body.

For muscle to repair and grow and, thus gain

strength, rest is a required component of the
formula. Clients should establish a healthy sleep
routine in order to facilitate protein synthesis and
repair. Quality and quantity of sleep matters for all
physiological functions of the body.

Nourish Your Body Appropriately: While caloric

control is necessary for long-term weight
management and healthy body composition,
restricting calories too much will be detrimental to
achieving muscle growth.

You can help your clients find the right balance of

nutrient intake by teaching them how to fuel
before and after their workouts as well as
referring them to a registered dietitian to optimize
their meal planning and timing, and hydration.

paramount to designing the optimal program.
This is also true for sports. Before the start of

ever participated in any sport, these were called
