Abstract – The city of Cagayan de Oro is densely populated and has areas of slopes with varying
elevations. Each year, extreme rainfall events occur in the city which in turn causes disasters such as
floods and landslides. Apart from the meteorological triggers the area also has proximity to fault lines
in Tagoloan river and Cabanglasan both in Misamis Oriental. Considered in this research are five
barangays namely, Macasandig, Carmen, Balulang, Indahag, and Camaman-an which are
preselected having dense populations and slopes of varying elevations. These barangays were also
reported to have experienced previous landslide occurrences. According to a geo-hazard map from
Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), the five barangays have high susceptibility to landslide
rating. Among the five barangays, Carmen has the most incidents of landslides, followed by
Camaman-an, Indahag, Macasandig, the Balulang. In these previous incidents, there were casualties
and damages to various roads, schools, and properties. This study aims to determine the locations of
high risk to landslides triggered by seismic and rain-induced factors in the five barangays mentioned
represented by a map created with Geographic Information Software (GIS). This study uses disaster
risk assessment process of quantifying the risk and utilizing grid overlay method in GIS. The risk
index is taken as a function multiple parameters which includes slope, lithology, soil humidity, land
cover, rain intensity, and seismic intensity for hazard; socio-economic assessment for vulnerability;
and population density for exposure. Maps in 10mx10m grids to determine the hazard, vulnerability,
exposure and landslide risk ratings were be generated and overlaid. The results show that areas with
steep slopes and dense population potentially exhibit high landslide risks. The specific areas the risk
map pointed out in the five barangays indicate that these areas must be critically examined for further
development with emphasis areas with steep slopes. A graphical representation created will serve as
contributing additional knowledge with quantitative information concerning landslide risks in Cagayan
de Oro. This study can also be the basis for the local government to prioritize in creating a mitigation
plan for specific areas and also provide adequate warnings when a landslide disaster does occur.
