Reflection: Formative Assessment is tasting the soup while cooking. Reflect on
this and write your reflections. Should you record results of formative assessment? Why or why not? Formative Assessment is an assessment which means that the educator or the teacher facilitates learning through giving recommendations, comments, and suggestions on how the learner should improve. It is also generally called as assessment for learning thereby the students engage learning competencies and provide useful and timely feedback in the pursuit of improvement and to attain knowledge, skills and understanding that are vital to their performance in the next part of assessment which is the summative assessment. Formative assessment is like a preparation of the students to test their capacity to deal and engage the final assessment which is the summative assessment—thereby the students are expected to attain and acquire knowledge, skills and understanding of the learning competencies, objectives and importantly align to the curriculum. From the statement above which is “Formative Assessment is tasting the soup while cooking. It is like an idiomatic expression to where the chef or the cook is the teacher and the soup represents the students whereby the cook adds some spices, llamas and seasoning to make the soup tasty enough to be ready to serve. The spices, llamas and seasoning symbolize as the formative assessment, teaching strategies and instructions to enable students to learn more and preparing them to the summative assessment. Formative assessment is not actually like summative assessment—it is not necessarily recorded wherein there the teacher constantly facilitates the learners through giving feedback, recommendations and suggestions. This is very useful in the final role play performance wherein the students will have a rehearsal first and the teacher is giving feedback to them. Furthermore, not just in the performance based that the formative assessment is useful, it is useful enough to measure the students to their understanding like for instance giving an exit tickets. Exit tickets are the reflections of the learner on how they understand the lesson and explain their own reflections about it. Reflections: The Primary purpose of assessment is not to measure but to further learning. Reflect on your personal experiences of assessment in school. Were you given opportunities for self-assessment? If yes, what was its impact on your learning? I truly believed that this statement refers to the Formative Assessment. The Purpose of formative assessment is not to measure students learning capacity but to nurture them with aid of providing timely feedback in the pursuit of improvement and attaining knowledge, skills and understanding. This will enable students to understand more driven by their own curiosity and motivation to engage more in the learning process. In the pursuit of competent students, they must be able to participate during discussion of the teacher to assess their confusions and questions about the lesson itself—thereby creating a gap between the turmoil they may experience during the lesson. Thus, enabling them during class discussion will have a massive impact into their development wherein they truly engage the lesson with timely feedback, comments and suggestion to foster learning improvement and assess them to the right way to do especially during the summative assessment. These are the reasons why formative assessment is a great tool for learning improvements: Caters the needs and concerns of the students to the task given by the teacher Enables learners to develop their higher order thinking skills. Fosters learning by means of providing and updating comments and suggestions to what is better to do the task given by the teacher. Encourages participation and engagement of the subject matter. Adheres cooperative learning. I have said these reasons because I actually experienced effective formative assessment in my high school life and it was done by an effective teacher to enable students learn effectively and efficiently. Though formative assessments will not be recorded, however it will serve as our attendance. Nevertheless, an educators aims to have a factual bases through summative assessments to measure the academic performance of the learners as form of evidences that are vital to maintain the vision and mission of the school, as well as the core values of the school. Learning Episode 13 Reflection: My assessments when I was a high student of Alfredo Parilla National High School. It was quite meaningful to engage especially when the teacher is conducting formative assessments in which my classmates are quite participative and have fun to learn. The learning objectives are being presented at the beginning of the lesson and the teacher calls someone in class to read the learning objectives so that we will know what we need to know and acquire the knowledge and skills as well as the understanding. Most of the teachers during my high school life prominently integrated this in their Detailed Lesson Plan especially when the principal is evaluating them through their demonstration. It truly affects my development and engagement in class due to the fact that we will be able to foresee what the lesson is as we dig down to the rabbit hole through engaging ourselves into the lesson and develop ways to better understand the lesson. Impressive Learning Outcomes are correlated with the teacher’s instructions, teaching strategies and most importantly the assessments. To have better learning outcomes of the learners the teacher must encompass the value of assessment in the classroom. These are the importance of well-planned, structured and effective assessment. Nurtures the learner to be improved in their learning. Encourages learners’ engagement to the subject matter. Assess learners to address their concerns, needs and questions. Reinforces organization of appropriate teaching strategies to apply to the very diverse learners. Integrates cooperative learning style as well as self-directed learning. Increases the capacity of acquiring necessary knowledge and skills; and Preparing learners to get the highest possible learning outcomes into the best of their capacity. As a future educator, I solemnly uphold the principles that fosters effective teaching strategies and well-planned assessments to increase the motivation of my students to listen and engage themselves into the lesson of Araling Panlipunan. Reflection: Are authentic assessment tools and tasks new? Reflect on your experiences of tests for all the years as a student? Authentic assessment is an approach to assessment that focuses on evaluating students’ ability to apply learning in real-world contexts. It integrates the use of outcome based education wherein students are tasked to do their projects that reflects the real world situations and scenarios—allowing them to demonstrate their own ideas, knowledge and understanding that integrates meaningful experiences. Furthermore, authentic assessment can be also identified as the traditional assessment wherein the educator is using multiple-choice tests or essays and other paper-pencil tests. Authentic assessment tools are not the latest tool used by the teacher, it was used ever since the learner centered curriculum is established by the Department of Education and probably that was a one decade ever since it was implemented. It might be new to the some of the teachers, especially those teachers that have preference on the old-curriculum wherein it was teacher-centered.
