WORKSHEET NO.

___
NEWTON’S LAWS OF MOTION

1. The leg and cast in the figure below weighs 220 N. Determine the weight W 2 and the angle α needed so that no
force is exerted on the hip joint by the leg plus the cast.

2. Assume the three blocks portrayed in the figure below move on a frictionless surface and a 42-N force acts as
shown on the 3.0-kg block. Determine

a. The acceleration given this system,

b. The tension on the cord connecting the 3.0-kg and the 1.0-kg blocks, and
c. The force exerted by the 1.0-kg block on the 2.0-kg block.

3. Two packing crates of masses 10.0 kg and 5.00 kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless
pulley as shown in the following figure. The 5.00- kg crate lies on a smooth incline at an angle of 40.00. Find

a. The acceleration of the 5.00-kg crate, and

b. The tension in the string.
4. A block of mass m= 5.8 kg is pulled up a θ = 250 incline as in the figure below with a force of magnitude F = 32
N. a) Find the acceleration of the block if the incline is frictionless.
b) Find the acceleration of the block if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the incline
is 0.10.

5. Block m1 and m2 weighing 500 N and 1500 N respectively are connected by a weightless rope passing over a
frictionless pulley as shown below. Assume coefficient of friction of 0.30 on all contact forces determine the
velocity of the system 5 seconds after starting from rest. Assume further θ1 = 350 and θ2 = 650.

6. A 2.00-kg aluminum block and a 6.00-kg copper block are connected by a light string over a frictionless pulley.
The two blocks are allowed to move on a fixed steel block wedge (of angle θ = 30.00) as shown in the figure below.
Determine a) the acceleration of the two blocks and b) the tension in the string.

7. A car accelerates down a hill, going from rest to 30.0 m/s in 6.00 s. During the acceleration, a toy (m = 0.100 kg)
hangs by a string from the car’s ceiling. The acceleration is such that the string remains perpendicular to the ceiling.
Determine a) the angle θ, and b) the tension in the string.
8. To extricate an SUV stuck in the mud, work men use three horizontal ropes, producing the force vectors shown
below. a) Find the x- and y- components of each of the three pulls. b) Use the components to find the magnitude
and direction of the resultant of the three pulls.
