SUBJECT: Grant Funding for an Elementary Music Classroom

Butterfly Ridge Elementary is a Pk-5th grade, inner-city, Title I school in Frederick County,
Maryland. Our students are economically disadvantaged and thrive off of experiences at school.
With a largely diverse population and many English language learners, mobile devices are a
huge tool for reaching the needs of students. Since the impact of the pandemic, our school has
lost numerous devices to damage, misuse, and your normal wear and tear. Because of this, we
have gone from being a one-to-one school, giving every student a device, to being a three-to-one
school, having multiple students share devices. In the music room, we don’t get to have our own
set of devices, which is why we are requesting funding to supply our students with tablets that
will be housed in the music room. Since I am the full time music teacher in our school, I serve
the entire population of students, making my total impact over 700 kids. No two classes are in
music at the same time, meaning that every single student would have the opportunity to utilize
the technology in the music room when it is their scheduled time for class.

As we foster the education of 21st century learners, we must also accept that our learners are
tech-driven. There are numerous projects my students will complete with the implementation of
tablets that are appropriate for the grade level they are in. For example, my 5th graders will
embark on an augmented reality project that will have them creating original compositions,
album art, and recordings of their compositions to be accessed through an application on their
tablets. Students will be practicing music skills, art skills, literacy skills, and reading skills for
the completion of the project. My 3rd grade classes will practice implementing tempo and
dynamics by creating a virtual track or roller coaster for their animated character that visually
demonstrates the musical elements they are writing. Kindergarteners will learn their very first
solfege syllables by creating matching puzzles that are identified by sound. These many projects
will be made possible with the funding provided.

My main focus with this grant is to expose my students to the multitude of capabilities they have
with digital devices. Many of the applications we wish to use are free of charge, so the only
funding we are requesting is for our hardware devices. Due to the lack of accessibility to having
devices directly in the music room, Funding for this project will ensure that these tablets are

leave the school system. The cost for the Kurio Smart Tablet for Students is listed below with the
