DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND COMMUNICATION ENGINEERING

PNG UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
Theory

A rectifier converts ac to dc. The process of converting AC signal (voltage, current and
power) into DC signal is called rectification. The circuit which performs this process is called
a rectifier.

The diagram below shows the Full wave rectification process. This idea is mainly applied in
most of the electronic devices that we use daily. Cell Phone is an example of this. If you
break open the charger of a phone, you will see a peace of electronic circuit board which
contains a transformer, Bridge rectifier, resistors and Capacitors exactly as designed in the
circuit shown.

Figure 1: Full wave rectification

It may seem simple but very useful if only you understand the concepts well

Lab Review

Explain following word words

a. Transformer
b. Half wave rectification
c. Full wave rectification
d. Bridge Rectifier
e. Filter

.Equipment List

Listed Below are the components used to designed the circuit

Source Voltage = 220

Frequency = 50Hz
2P2S Transformer
Bridge Rectifier
1000uF Cap-Pol Capacitor
2*0.1uF Capacitor
330 ohms Resistor
Yellow Led
AC Voltmeter
DC Voltmeter
Oscilloscope
Voltage Probe

Procedure

1. Use the Protus Software to design a Full wave ratification using the components given
above. Make so to place AC and DC multimeter at right place to obtain proper
reading
2. Once the circuit is complete check to see that your final output is 5Volts and that is
without addition of Resistor and Load
3. Add the Resistor and load and again your final output voltage would be 2.22V

Task 1

Design the proper Transformer ratio if Vs is 220V and apply this in your Transformer Design
to obtain the proper output

Task 2

Use Oscilloscope to obtain the waveform indicated below and make so you display design of
your circuit.

a. Vs – Source AC Voltage or Primary Voltage

b. Vp – Secondary AC Voltage
c. Vb – Rectified DC Voltage
d. Vo – Output DC Voltage

Task 3

Rectification is the process of converting AC – DC according to your lecture notes. Figure 2

below is the summary Result that you would obtain in Task 2 if correctly designed. Now,
there are four waveforms which are Vs, Vp, Vb and Vo as indicated in task 2. Please explain
well accordingly. in order to understand this you must do task 1 and 2

Figure 2: Full Wave form of Rectification

Note

If your Design is done as accordingly, you will get full mark. No copy paste or Lazy
work.
