What must one take to be a critic?
Critical Reading and Thinking
Is making judgement about information one reads or hears.

A person thinks more deeply about what he/she reads.

Going beyond and getting important message from the


text.

Styles
Interpreting
•Thinking about what a writer is really saying
in a text and using one’s schema.

•There is really no absolutely correct


interpretation.
Inferring
• Used by a reader to understand an idea that the
author does not explicitly say.
• Reading between the lines.
• Putting together the author’s ideas at a certain
point and coming up with an implicitly stated
idea based on those given ideas.
Drawing Conclusions
• Figuring how much more than what an author
says directly.
• It is a combination information and evidence
that the author provide.
• It is usually done after reading the whole text.
Analyzing
• Is looking at separate, detailed parts of the texts
to understand the entire piece.

• Taking apart the ideas and see how they connect


with each other to support the main idea of the
text.
Distinguishing Fact from Opinion
•Cite a fact and opinion in the reading text.
Evaluating
• Forming an opinion or making judgement.

• The reader makes judgements as to how


qualified the author is and how reliable the
information being presented is.
Synthesizing
•Combining ideas to come up with
something new.

•Your ideas form a coherent whole, which


serves as your new understanding.
Predicting
•Making an intelligent guesses about what
will happen next in a text.
