The Impact of Video Games on Spatial Cognition in Children

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of video games on spatial cognition
in children.

Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 100 children, aged between 8-12 years, who were
divided into two groups: a video game group and a non-video game group. The video game group
consisted of children who played video games for at least 1 hour per day, while the non-video game
group consisted of children who did not play video games regularly. Both groups completed
standardized tests of spatial cognition, including mental rotation and spatial visualization tasks.

Results: The results showed that the video game group had significantly higher scores on both mental
rotation and spatial visualization tasks compared to the non-video game group. These findings suggest
that regular video game play may have a positive impact on spatial cognition in children.

Conclusion: The study provides evidence for the potential benefits of video games on spatial cognition in
children. Further research is needed to explore the underlying mechanisms and long-term effects of
video game play on spatial cognition, as well as its potential as a cognitive training tool for children.
