Day 01 Liver Detoxification, Abhyangam & Swedana
Ayurveda views the liver as “hot” or “pittic” (energy of pitta). In
Ayurveda, when the liver is unable to perform well it also leads to an imbalance of Vata – Pitta – Kapha doshas. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy liver as it is the major organ controlling physical and mental aspects of Pitta humor. It attributes liver congestion and damage to excessive heat that is trapped in the liver.
Abhyangam is an Ayurvedic massage therapy or treatment that
is performed to soothe your body, mind, immune system and skin. The treatment involves ample amount of oil and a distinctive one or two therapist sequence which softens and relaxes the tissues. During the massage therapy, your body is massaged in the direction in which your blood from your artery flows, basically in the direction of the body hair. The scientific reason behind following this protocol is to increase the flow of blood to the most distal body parts and to avoid increasing pressure on the heart through venous return in case the massage is done in the opposite direction .
Swedana is a steam treatment explained in
Ayurvedic medical science. The word Sweda is derived from Sanskrit swid, meaning ‘to sweat or to perspire’. So swedana is the process of inducing sweat with the help of steam, generated from medicated herbal decoctions. It is the pre-operative procedure in various Ayurvedic detox therapies where the objective is to dilate the channels of the body to detach the toxins from the tissues. Ayurvedic fomentation is usually given after an oil massage.
