CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Self-related perception has become an essential subject in education, given its impact on

students’ academic performance. This self-related perception includes self-esteem. Self-esteem is

how ones value or perceive oneself.

The world is perceived as a theatrical stage on which individuals act in conformity to

what and how they want to be seen in the most desired way, showing that acceptance and

validation from others are necessary. Some people may realize their worth based on whether or

not they have done well in school. They learned to recognize and understand the differences

between themselves and their peers. Students assess their performance by determining whether

or not they performed well in class, and believing in their goodness speaks to their self-esteem.

Satisfying self-esteem needs leads to feelings and attitudes of self-confidence, self-worth,

capacity, and a sense of being useful and necessary. Those who have been valued in such a way

that they are loved and recognized for their goodness, tend to have high levels of self-esteem.

According to Salandanan (2015), students who expressed positive emotions in a

classroom showed better performance on learning tasks than others. Classrooms are places where

students are observed working cooperatively with one another and with the teacher on important

learning tasks. Achievement motivation creates an academic environment in which students feel

good about themselves and their peers, their personal needs are satisfied, and students have the

requisite skills to manage the demands of classroom life. Examinations or continuous

assessments are commonly used to assess school performance, but there is no general agreement

on how it should be measured. Academic achievement, on the other hand, is commonly utilized

as a basis for how a student performs in school.

According to the researcher's previous study, self-esteem is defined as an individual's

inclusive emotional and attitudinal judgment of oneself, which includes the belief in one's level

of competency and proficiency, which both play important predictors of possible outcomes such

as academic performance.

Furthermore, Zhi (2014) from Malaysia stated in their study that self-esteem is an

important factor for students to develop. Students with high self-esteem are also more likely to

obtain good results. Considering self-esteem as a factor to how students perceive themselves as

superior, equal, or inferior to their classmates’ influences how they do academically. When these

needs are not met, feelings and attitudes of inferiority, ineptness, weakness, passivity, and

dependency develop. These negative self-perceptions lead to basic discouragement, a sense of

futility and hopelessness in dealing with life's demands, and a low evaluation of oneself in

comparison to others. Such inferiority may be rooted from differences in abilities or skills, which

can lead to feelings of strangeness and isolation, and some students choose to be alone rather

than participate in an activity that could place them in an undesirable situation and emphasize

their weaknesses.

In this light, the researchers found purpose and worth in the investigation of this study,

which aimed to determine the relationship between students' self-esteem and academic

performance.

Significance of the study

Research has documented that high self- esteem plays an important role in academic

performance, social and personal responsibility. The aim of this research is to determine how a

student's self-esteem affects their academic performance.

Iloilo Doctors’ College-Senior High School Students: This study will help them to learn more

about how self-esteem affects their academic performance. This study will help them estimate

the proportion of students who are aware of the relationship between academic performance and

self-esteem. Students who perform well academically benefit from improved work opportunities,

higher levels of confidence and self-esteem, and lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Teachers: This study could benefit teachers in determining how a student's self-esteem affects

their academic performance. They may know those who have higher academic achievement tend

to feel more confident in contrast those who lack confidence in themselves achieve less.

Future Researchers: This study will serve as a guide or reference to the future researchers who

intend to conduct similar research.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is a causal-comparative type of quantitative research. To collect data for this

study and to be able to meet all the standards for this quantitative research study, the researchers

will use the stratified random sampling method to ensure that each subgroup is properly

represented in the sample in order to enable the researchers to reach more precise conclusions by

using paper survey questionnaires. Causal analysis is the statistical analysis that will be used for

this study to determine the cause and effect within the raw data. And before any questions are

utilized, the assigned teacher will thoroughly evaluate, validate, and approve them.

The students in Grades 11 and 12 are the focus of this study. This study aims to

determine the percentage of students and their knowledge with the relationship between

academic performance and self- esteem. The respondents will be coming from the Grades 11 and

12 Senior High School Students of Iloilo Doctors College – Basic Education Department. This

study sheds light on the possibility that a student’s self- esteem may influence their academic

performance.
