Concetti shop protection and painting system is generally applied on the single parts before the assembly
of the equipment.
If not otherwise stated, carbon steel surfaces will be painted, with the exception of the machined surface,
coupling surfaces, threaded and precision holes, gasket contact surfaces. These surfaces, or other surfaces
which are normally not painted, but require protection during transportation and construction, shall be
protected with a coating of rust preventive compound.
Structural carbon steel will be painted with the same painting procedure and system of the mechanical parts.
Zinc electroplating, copper, brass and their alloys will be avoided when technically possible. The use of
aluminum will be reduced as technically practical. Aluminum and other non-corrosion resistant surfaces, if
any, will be protected according to the system detailed in Painting Schedule.
On sub-vendor equipment such as motors, vacuum pumps, fans, instruments, electrical equipment,
transformers, electrical enclosures and valve’s accessory parts the protective paint system selection will be
made according to sub-vendor’s protective coating system if not otherwise specified.

4. Surfaces not to be painted

The following surfaces are NOT to be painted for protection against corrosion, unless otherwise specified:
- All stainless steel types and all nichel alloys steels. SS metal sheets will be supplied with grade 2B surface
finish, and they will not be surface treated anymore.
- Surface of aluminum, brass, copper and their alloys if anticorrosion treatment is previously applied.
- Galvanized or metalized surfaces

5. Surface preparation

Dry abrasive blasting techniques will be used for surface preparation. The abrasive quality is according to
the technical data sheet given in Attachment #1.
Blasting is performed in a dedicated cubicle to prevent unintended damaging to other machinery or
equipment in the surroundings.
Compressed air for spraying and blasting will be technically oil, water and dust free. Maximum available air
pressure is 8 bar(g).
Prior to surface preparation, all visible defects such as fins, burrs and sharp edges will be removed.
All rough welds, burrs, weld spatters, indentations, and all other sharp surface projections shall be ground
smooth prior to further surface preparation. Steel and fabrication defect such as spatters, scabs, sharp
edges and etc, before or after blast cleaning shall be repaired prior to painting.

GENERAL SURFACE PROTECTION AND PAINTING SPECIFICATION

PAGE: 6 of 14

All blast cleaned surfaces shall be primed before visually detectable cleanliness degree degradation occurs.
If visible cleanliness degree degradation occurs, the metal surfaces affected shall be slightly re-blasted and
where necessary washed to remove rust blooming and accumulation of soluble salts.
The abrasive used in manual blast cubicles in which the abrasive is recovered, screened and re-used shall
be a mixture of steel grit and steel shot able to produce the required visual surface profile condition.
The abrasive mixture shall be replenished using new and worn abrasive so as to produce a consistent
profile.
Abrasive blast cleaning employing sand as abrasive media shall not be permitted.
Cleaning after blasting will be done by air blowing and manual cloth cleaning.
The items not to be painted shall be shielded and protected to prevent damage during surface preparation
and paint material application operations. Blasted surfaces will be painted within six hours.
Care shall be taken to ensure the quality of prepared surface does not deteriorate before the application of
the paint.

6. Paint material management, handling and preparation

Paints shall be delivered to Concetti in the original packing, bearing the manufacturer's name, batch number
and brand.
Painting materials will be stored in a well-ventilated room, free from excessive heat or direct sun rays. Room
temperature will normally range between +5°C and +40°C. In any case painting material storage will comply
with requirements stated in the applicable data sheets. Intermixing of products of different supplier is
excluded.
Paint manufacturer's recommendations for paint application such as surface preparation, drying time and
temperature shall be adhered to.
Preferred painting materials are detailed in Attachment #2
Paint colors, if not otherwise stated or agreed, will be according to the table given in Painting Schedule

7. Application conditions

Painting process, if not otherwise stated, will be done at room condition, at the typical site condition of
Vendor's facilities. The painting process is performed in a dedicated area. No HVAC system and humidity
control is generally foreseen. Weather statistics show that condensating conditions are normally never
reached in the room conditions.
The normal temperature range is +10°C / + 40°C
The normal humidity range is 30-90%. In any case surface preparation and painting shall not be undertaken
in conditions which are favorable to surface condensation or when surface condensation is likely to occur.
Print will not be applied on wet or damp surfaces, or when there is risk for such a condition to happen (e.g.
Low temperature with high humidity).
Application will be performed only after all thermal treatment and inspection procedures (e.g. NDE) (if any)
are applied to the materials to be painted.
Storage and drying of painted parts is done at room conditions indoor, in a weather protected area of
Concetti facilities.

8. Paint application methods

Powder coating will be applied. The powder will be sprayed with a suitable air gun. Powder adhesion to the
surfaces will be based on electrostatic effect.
Paint materials shall be applied by the paint manufacturer’s recommended method. In case of different
method should be applied, prior manufacturer's approval will be asked for.
Materials, gauge and air pressure on the spray guns shall be regulated to achieve optimum atomization of
the paint with the lowest possible pressures to avoid spray ricochet from the surface being painted.

Overlapping horizontal and vertical passes shall be made for each spray coat to obtain uniform application.
Particular care shall be exercised to ensure that a uniform, complete coat is applied.
Coats of paints shall be uniformly applied without sags, runs, spots, damage or contamination, such
irregularities shall be immediately removed and the affected area brought back to the acceptable paint film
quality.
Each coat of paint shall be in the proper state before the application of the succeeding coat.
Coatings which have weathered shall be thoroughly inspected and actions taken if deemed necessary, prior
to application of further coats to prevent intercoat adhesion problems.
Full precaution shall be paid to keep prime coat in good condition.
To minimize intercoat contamination, succeeding coats shall be applied with a minimum time lapse.
Painting shall be carefully done at all edges, corners, crevices, rivets, welds, and other complex shapes,
because those parts are apt to rust.
Painting shall be carefully done in such a way as to give a coating free from lifting, loose of adhesion,
discoloration, and finished to uniform film thickness.
The applied film thickness (FT) over any square meter shall have average readings that are not less than
specified Nominal Film Thickness (NFT), and complying with the “80/20” rule, so at least 80% of total
readings taken are to be not less than specified NFT and the remainder 20% of total reading taken, are to
be not lower than 0,8 x NFT.
The wet film thickness is normally not checked. The dry film thickness of individual coats shall never exceed
the manufacturers recommended maximum thickness.

9. Painting repairs

Areas where primer is damaged or unprimed shall be spot cleaned by means of power tool brush cleaning
or hand tool cleaning. The same primer as that specified in the shop shall be used for re-priming or priming
unprimed areas.
Document code: PAT-0001

GENERAL SURFACE PROTECTION AND PAINTING SPECIFICATION

PAGE: 9 of 14

Primers shall be applied in 1 coat to at least the specified minimum dry film thickness. Where primer
thickness has not been attained, the area shall be recoated to the proper thickness.
Spot cleaning and retouching of painted areas abraded or otherwise damaged during shipping and/or
erection, shall be Concetti responsibility. Touch-up material shall compatible to the shop applied coat.
Touch-up will be manually done by brushing or spraying wet type paint.
Painting repairs shall be done when there are developments of any detrimental film irregularities, such as
loose, cracked, brittle, non-adherent paint or discoloration.
Inadequate film thickness shall require the further application of an additional complete coat over the whole
area until the dry film thickness is sufficient to meet specified nominal.
If during inspections, painting defects (such as dripping, blistering, mud-cracking, over thickness, dry spray,
pinholes and roughness) or conditions of preparation, thickness, etc. not conform to the requirements would
be ascertained, faulty surfaces will be brought back to the acceptability degree.

10. Corrosion protection other than painting

Exposed surface that couldn’t be painted, will be protected with corrosion inhibitor agents. They will be
applied by brushing or spraying, and they will not be removed or repainted, unless required for coupling with
other parts of equipment.
Bolts and nuts will be zinc coated, according to manufacturer’s standard, or made in stainless steel.
Selection of bolt type will be according to project specifications.
In case of aggressive environment, components that are not resistant to corrosion will be protected
according to system detailed in Painting Schedule.
