DATA HANDLING

Chapter – 15

* We collect information on various things in our day to day life. Such


information is called data.
* Data can be represented with the help of pictures.
* The pictorial representation of data is called a pictograph.
Data

Data is a collection of facts and figures like number of girls in a class, number
of different animals in a zoo, name of students of a class.
Pictograph
Pictorial representation of any information is called a pictograph. It uses
symbols to represent data.
A pictograph must have a title and may also have a note giving the details of
that picture.
Ex 15A
Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q5 will be discussed in class and will be written in notebook.
Q4 is deleted.

Each = 5 books
a) How many books were borrowed on Sunday?
Ans. 20 books.
b) How many books were borrowed on Thursday?
Ans. 6 x 5 = 30 books.
c) On which day were the least number of books borrowed?
Ans. On Tuesday (10 books)
Read the pictograph and answer the following.
Q2. Given below is a pictograph representing how the students of class 3 go
to school.

Read the pictograph and answer the following.

Each = 2 students
a) How many students go to school by riding cycle,
Ans. 6 x 2 = 12 students
b) How many students go to school by car?
Ans. 4 x 2 = 8 students
c) Which mode of transport is used by the maximum number of students?
Ans. By bus.
d) How many students do not go to school by car?
Ans. Bus - 14
Cycle - 12
On foot - 6

Total - 32

32 students do not go to school by car.

Q3. Following pictograph shows the number of fruits sold by a fruit seller in a
week
Refer for figure, Page 201.
Each symbol = 5 fruits
Read the pictograph and answer the following.
a) Which fruit is sold the most?
Ans. Pears
b) Which fruit is sold the least?
Ans. Strawberry
c) Find the number of pomegranates sold during a week?
Ans. 6 x 5 = 30
d) Find the difference between the number of oranges and strawberries sold?
No. of oranges sold = 5 x 5 = 25
No. of strawberries sold = 10
Difference = 25 – 10 = 15
Q4. Find pictograph shows the favourite flavour of ice cream for the students.
Refer for figure, Page 202

Each = 4 students
Read the pictograph and answer the following.
a) Which flavour is liked the most? How many students like it?
Ans. Strawberry is liked the most. There are 20 students who like it,
b) How many students are there in total?

Ans. = 5 x 4 = 20

= 4 x 4 = 16

= 3 x 4 = 12

= 4 x 4 = 16
Total 20 + 16 + 12 + 16 = 64 students
c) Find the sum of number of students liking the green pista and chocolate
chip flavour?
Ans. Green pista = 4 x 4 = 16
Chocolate chip = 3 x 4 = 12
Total = 16 + 12 = 28 students
